I want to try a lighter hoop and I'm not sure if I should go with 1/2" 160 psi or 3/4" 100 psi. I want to be able to do the foot pop up without bruising my foot. Plus I want to make vertical off the body easier. I have 1/2" 100 psi and it is definitely too light. I have been using 3/4" 160. Plus it doesn't seem to want to smooth out to a good circle even after a fair amount of use. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

Well, hmmm... I use 100psi 1/2" & the pop-up still causes searing pain & bruises! What about just going up to 125psi?

Mine seem to keep their circle without lots of fuss... the brand I use is Silverline Sil-O-Flex from Lowes.
Yeah I would recommend 125 psi if you can get it...160 is quite stiff, but it still works. Same with me, the foot pop up is always painful!
i think learning kick start is always painful...and with a lighter hoop it will take longer to learn because you will need to hoop faster and be more precise. i would say go 1/2" if you can simply because the smaller diameter makes gripping easier for off body and poi style moves.

some people who do a lot of all night fire hooping pad their fire hoops to prevent bruising. maybe try padding your practice hoop? the adhesive foam tape used for window insulation works great. you can get it at any hardware store. take any hoop that's already decorated and line the inside with the padding. don't spiral it...just make one solid loop on the inside only of your hoop and then cover that with grip tape that's twice as wide...again one solid loop.

good luck!
That is one fantastic idea! My ankles are thanking you in advance!
I fully understand :) I could only find 1/2" 120 psi so I cannot compare it. So I just go between my 1/2" 120 & 3/4" 160. I still have not conquered the 'Phenoix' kick start off so...not sure myself. But off the body I love both for different things. If I stay with one then it takes a little to get used to the other. Not much help...
Does anyone have a video of the move you are talking about?? I only hoop with a 3/4 inch 160 PSI hoop. I have tried the lighter ones and just don't like them so I stuck with the size I started with. I am trying to figure out what everyone is doing cause I keep reading forums about how much this hurts and how everyone is getting bruised ankles and such and I can't figure it out. I know how to do a kick start and I play with my hoop like a skip it and I have never had a problem with it hurting my ankles? Maybe if I knew what exactly ya'll were doing I might be able to give some pointers on how to make it hurt less? I don't know just trying to help. Good Luck every body!!
I know that nomenclature varies a lot in hooping, but as far as I can tell, kick start & pop up are essentially the same move. What isn't the same is people's ankles! Some of us seem to be a whole lot more sensitive in that area. You are one of the lucky ones! :) Any tips are still welcome of course.
