Hi everybody,

My name is lisa, I'm new here.
I'm also just starting to hoop. I started hooping last week and I still kinda s*ck.
I'm getting kind of frustrated because I can't do any tricks.
So I wanted to ask you, How long did it take you to get where you are now?
I can hoop at my waist and that's pretty much it. haha

I'm trying to hoop at my chest but I can't do it for that long, it keeps falling down
And hooping at my neck and then put my arm through, but when I do so my arm lifts up the hoop and suddenly i'm doing the lasso :S
And I'm trying the shimmy, hooping at my waist then put 2 arms in and lift it up to my chest or neck... yeah... can't do that either....
Should I keep trying? Or would you say... Hey if you can't do it after a week you should probably find yourself another hobby :P

Lots of love
Lisa

PS: Sorry for my poor english, i'm dutch....

Heeey Lisa! Welcome! Your English is wonderful, I can't speak any other languages so you're already way ahead of me :-)

The first thing I would say is no no no! Never ever give up! I am 3 years into hooping and am still kinda clunky and haven't mastered many things. But some people do it for a month and hoop like experts. People learn at different rates.

Ok so if you can hoop at your waist after a week then you are doing well! Maybe you are trying too much at once and it will make you feel overwhelmed and want to give up. I would try staying with waist hooping, enjoy how it feels, try it with eyes closed, try lots of turns in both directions. When you are really happy in the hoop you could concentrate on one trick at a time. If you are already lifting it (by accident) from the neck try a lift from the waist. Watch tutorials again and again.

Try waist hooping to your favourite tunes. This will help movement and your enjoyment.

Above all, have fun! And keep coming back to let us know how you are doing.

Liz x
Wow guess what, I was just hooping and thought; forget those stupid tricks, I'm just gonna have fun and all of a sudden I was hooping at my chest AND my hips, effortless!! Whiiii, felt incredible!! Me = loving hooping...

Can you hoop too much?
I also had a dream about hooping last night, that can't be right.. :P
I started hooping 11 o clock this morning, it's 14:37 now, still hooping, I'm sweating like a baboon haha
Hi Lisa!

No, you can not hoop too much. :) I would be very happy if I was a child again and would have all days just for hooping.

Happy hooping!
Your english is fantastic! And please do NOT give up!! I agree, it's so easy to watch videos of safire, shakti sunfire, luna breeze, and other people who are 'experts' and be overwhelmed and think 'i could never do that'. But you have to remember that they all started out as beginners. I've been hooping since February of this year and I'm pretty comfortable with tricks, but I don't have that grace and flow that I want. What I noticed I did... I would get overwhelmed with all the tricks and try a whole bunch at once. Just focus on one trick at a time. Shoulder hooping was really tricky for me to get. But now I love it. Hooping as all about timing and knowing the rhythm of your hoop. Just waist hoop and get to know the rhythm. Let us know how it's going!!
the english is good!!

...I like Liz's idea of getting completely comfortable with waist hooping, turning one way, then the opposite way, going slower, faster, and put on some music and dance too!

...when I started I tried to learn the most basic tricks, the tricks that would help me understand how to do the others, in other words help "open doors" to learn other tricks. the first trick I wanted to learn was the lift up and drop down, from/to the waist. now, learning to do even that took me a almost a week where I just focused on that.

other than that please DON'T give up. sometimes it takes me a week to learn a trick sometimes a couple days. and once in awhile when I have another hooping friend there teaching me, I can learn within a couple minutes or an hour. everyone learns at a different pace though. GOOD LUCK!!
Hey, thanks for all the fast replies to my message...

I started hooping at 11 o'clock this morning and stopped at 17 o'clock.
I practiced chest hooping, lifting up with my first and second hand en dropping down with my first and seccond hand, and hooping at my hips...

I can already hoop at the chest with no arms, lift up and drop down with my first hand and hoop at my hips.
Me= happy haha

Hooping makes me feel so free, I really love it, can't get enough of it....
So here's another question for you guys....

'' How does hooping make you feel??''

Lots of love and happy hooping!!

Ps; once again, thank you for all of the fast replies, thanks to you I didn't give up when I couldn't do the tricks...
I had the same feeling, especially at my first and only class when I couldn't do what everybody else could. I forced myself to keep on going because I really wanted to do it, and then I had a great opportunity to hoop in a huge backyard with a lake for scenery. No one else there could do diddly with the hoop, which freed me enough to start experimenting more. Progress is slow, but I have been rewarded for every hour of practice. Probably the biggest breakthrough was when I finally felt comfortable enough with some of the movements to incorporate a bit of my own dancing. Then I finally began to understand what "flow" was all about.

So, as for how hooping makes me feel, I would say challenged, energized, and strong. It also makes me feel more in tune with music, as I can more options to express it.

D
dont worry lisa ive been hooping for a year. and in the first weeks and months i had bruises up and down my body. just keeping the hoop on my waist was "trick"enough. be proud of that because thats not easy lol* do things in small steps this is a life long commitment and some days youwill want to pick up thehoop every minute and some days you hate it . keep practing. if you cant get one trick take a breath watch some you tube videos to inspire you get on hoop city and talk to us to keepyou going. try walking with the hoop while waist hooping. that is a reallygood skill i used to walk around my apt. complex just waist hooping so i knew i could get the feel to come for my next tricks i learned.
be brave and love yourself and the hoop and youll start getting it. everyone is their own inside the hoop.
many hoops and love
if you need anything let me know
linz
Hey Linz, thanks for your advise...

Ectually, this afternoon, I walked around the room while hooping, I texted while hooping and I even grabbed, peeled (don't know if that's the correct word) and ate a banana while hooping... LOL

I could already hoop at the waist so thats not really a big deal to/for me, that's why I'm so enxious to learn tricks...
(enxious is a good thing right?? I dind't mean it like; afraid or shy or anything, it has more meanings right? I thought my english was okay, but it's really hard sometimes haha)
anxious can be a good or bad thing. It just means you're excited for something to happen. I'm definately anxious to learn tricks too. And don't worry about your english... It's nearly perfect!

And yes, peeled it the correct word to use.
Its ok.to get excited or anxious I do it all the time just remember to be patient with yourself and even the small accomplishment is the biggest I say that's talent to peel and eat a banana hooping you go girl your English is awesome I'm so happy u found this community
DON'T GIVE UP!!! it look me a while to achieve chest hooping. I think it took me a little over a month to get it down. and even longer to make it graceful :) After a month I made my first video and I was NO where NEAR graceful. But the more you practice the better you'll get and the better you'll feel about yourself. Never give up!! You'll be doing amazing tricks in no time and impressing your friends and family. :) It's so rewarding when you FINALLY get something. Then when you master it and it feels second nature that's when it really gets exciting.

Keep up the hooping!! :)
