I do my metallics in two spirals. I lay one spiral down, then run a strip of 1/2" matching gaffer (kodak yellow for gold and gray for silver, etc.) around the inside of the hoop and then lay down the other metallic spiral. This hoop is pink and silver so you can see the two spirals, but the process is the same for one color. My thumb is pointing out the gaffer in the close-up.

I got the idea from this thread:http://www.hoopcity.ca/forum/topics/taping-hoops?commentId=2737361%...

i do the same thing on mine!
oooh nice!
awsome idea!!
Hey, that's pretty cool, thanks for the tip!
I made my first hoop tonight and did this.. it was a little tricky keeping it really straight but not too bad. No one will see if I learn to spin real well ;-)
Does leaving the edges of one of the metallic tapes uncovered result in the tape fraying? I'm just curious... I've heard of people saying to make sure the edges have something holding them down. It looks super cool, though, and I'd like to give it a try!
I have had people say that the edge of their metallic tape was coming up so if I am selling a hoop to someone I don't know, I always tape down both edges, to ensure they won't have any problems in the future. As far as hoops for myself or my friends, i think it is a matter of personal preference, with how you want the look and how long/what you plan on using the hoop for.

The edges can start to come up. It is also a lot more fragile than gaffer or vinyl. I would only use it on grass, dance floors or carpet. A lot of people completely cover their metallic hoops with clear hockey tape. I tried it with these hoops (the pink and silver are my minis), but I thought it really detracted from the sparkle. It might not make so much difference with mirror tape though. I taped the ends of each spiral with clear hockey to keep it stuck down. These hoops have lasted for six months so far.

If you use clear hockey tape, you can still use the same method to add gaffer grip. You would lay down both spirals of metallic and one spiral of clear hockey tape then add the gaffer before laying down the last spiral of hockey.

How do you get the metallic tape to lie flat and smooth.  As careful as I am it crinkles.  Trying to make an all-metallic performance hoop.
I have the same problem. As much as I really love the look of all-metallic performance hoops, I avoid making them for this reason.
Practice!!  It's impossible to avoid a few small crinkles but with an even hand you can get it really smooth.
