I do my metallics in two spirals. I lay one spiral down, then run a strip of 1/2" matching gaffer (kodak yellow for gold and gray for silver, etc.) around the inside of the hoop and then lay down the other metallic spiral. This hoop is pink and silver so you can see the two spirals, but the process is the same for one color. My thumb is pointing out the gaffer in the close-up.

I got the idea from this thread:http://www.hoopcity.ca/forum/topics/taping-hoops?commentId=2737361%...

Thanks for the encouragement!

Yup, practice, practice!!  In my experience the holographic tapes are the hardest to do, but still very much do-able.... I made one a couple of weeks ago.  I just made a set of teeny mini's in solid green sequins last night!!

One thing I do to make sure I'm laying down the tape right is to keep the backing on the tape and make a couple of loops around the pipe to see how the angle needs to be.  When you figure out where the tape needs to start, take a pair of sissors (or something with a sharp edge) and trace a line an inch or so along the edge of the tape, marking where it is laying.  Then when you actually start taping it, use the line as your starting guide!  As long as you don't stretch the tape it should flow right along!!

Wow. Marking the angle is a great idea. I never would have thought of that. I just try to remember how it was. Can't wait to try this.

what a pretty hoop!

Nice! I found out that when you try to put the strip of gaffer in last and in one strip it just pulls up. If you want to put the gaffer on the outside of all the tape you have to do it in small sections (probably no more than 18 inches long) so the tension from the circle doesn't pull it right up.
You can do it in one strip, you just have to tape a small section at a time and press it down as you go.
I guess everything with hooping is practice.  Been trying to flatten and press and am going very very slow....  hopefully soon it won't look like the tinfoil on a casserole :)  Maybe my 2" tape is too thick.
All about practice!  Just keep an eye on your angle as you lay down the tape.  If you change the angle, that's when you get lots of wrinkles.  Oh gosh girl!  Yes, 2" tape is too wide and won't come out well unless it's really flexible (like duct tape).  1" is perfect for large hoops and can be used on small diameter hoops but 3/4" really is perfect for the smaller diameter hoops.  Hope that helps, you'll get it with time and patience : )
Oh my gosh!  You weren't kidding!  The 1" metallic is so much easier - it's going on smooth!  yay!
YAY!!  So glad it's working!

What are the names of your colors and where did you buy them? The pink looks almost like neon coral and is gorgeous!
