I just started taking ballet as a recreational class, and I'm kind of impressed by how bad I am at it! I wanted to take it to improve my balance, grace and leg strength, and most of the time I just feel like I'm falling over.

My biggest problem is that I can't for the life of me hold what little turnout I've managed to develop, especially on rond de jambe or pretty much anything en l'air. Any advice on how to hold it, and any advice on how to improve it?

Also, I think that I supinate a lot when I turnout. I don't know if that's the cause, but my balance is pretty terrible. Unless I'm in first or second, I have a lot of trouble shifting weight and I tend to stumble.

Are there any exercises or stretches you guys would recommend to develop the muscles and balance I need to improve my ballet skills? Any particular ballet techniques I should practice?

Oh, and do any of you manage to synthesize your ballet skills with your hooping? What does it look like? What's your favorite thing about ballet? :)

Sounds awesome! I'd love to join. :) Hahaha I'm in so many groups, I wonder if that's a bad thing...

Sweeeeettt!!!!
Okay, the hoopDANCERS group is now up! Everyone is welcome!
yes!!!!!!
I took jazz for about a year and it improved my hooping tremendously. The grace and balance certainly helped, but i felt like more than that it helped spark my creativity and open up my mind to a whole new world of movements. I'll be taking ballet this coming spring and i can't wait!
