Hello everyone! Are burn offs (like the kind you can do with poi) possible with fire hoops? I understand that this will probably void any warranty on a fire hoop and could mess it up a lot in the long run- if I even try it will be with a very very old fire hoop that's falling apart already (not my baby performance fire hoop from Sacred Flame!). I was thinking that it might be possible if you do a skip-it type move, but I'm not sure how the fire will spread around it. Has anyone here attempted this or do you have any insight as to how it could be done? Also, if you think it would be crazy dangerous that would be helpful information as well! Thanks muchly in advance.

However, the key to poi burnoffs is to "throw the poi down" and yank the wick back as it hits the bottom of the curve. This causes most of the fuel to go down instead of up and out. IF you could manage such a thing with a hoop, then the top wicks would still be raining fuel on the hoop, making things more dangerous for the hooper. Most people would just isolate to get droplets off, but those would go in random directions... including straight up.
Permalink Reply by Scunshine on January 30, 2012 at 1:10pm See I didn't know that about poi! I've seen members of my fire troupe do it all the time but never knew the actual motion they were using. Thanks for the explanation :D
I've seen it done before. It's kinda of a fish-tail move if you know what that is. The hoop is held on your wrist and you swing your arm in a circular motion from the shoulder socket. You have to position your hand so the hoop doesn't go flying off (ie your hand will remain straight but bent at the wrist at a 90 degree angle and rotating depending where the hoop is making contact). You also have to swing it quite forcefully so the gas will spray off onto the ground (and subsequently into the air and everywhere else, so it's not that safe unless you're experienced), and you also have to brush the lit wick against the ground to ignite the sprayed off fuel.
I guess another way to do it would be to just spin it on your hand very fast and hold it near enough the ground so that it can ignite, but you have a better chance of spraying your body that way.
Permalink Reply by Sarah Spreen on February 2, 2012 at 6:24pm I do this kind of spin off. However, I hoop it on my hand like I would normally I find this has more control over the hoop. On another note I have never had a problem with the fuel on the ground not igniting on its own. I suppose depending on how much fuel you put on it can kind of drip fire.
That is another thing I wanted to bring up. When you do this line spin off you should make sure it does not line up with the fuel cache or anything that might light up (just in case) also, when determining your distance from things you should take into consideration how much fuel is on the hoop and how fast you spin. More fuel = longer line, faster spin=longer line as well.
I would not be too concerned about having fuel land on you. As long as you do not over fuel your hoop you will only get very lightly sprinkled, which should evaporate pretty fast. If you are concerned about the fuel on you I would say do some above head hooping, isolations, or anything that would keep the hoop away from you for a little bit for the fuel to evaporate (30seconds-ish).
I think it would be cool to try experimenting with holding the hoop horizontal and doing that quick drop/pull motion Bearclaw suggested while the hoop is unlit then lighting up the ground. Though it could evaporate by the time you are ready to light it up.
If you mean this > http://youtu.be/q_hto5etT4o by burn off... then, yes, it's possible! :)
yes it is!! :) I played with his fire hoop the other day... I'm hooked! :D
