As there are relatively few of us in the UK still, I thought it a good idea to get a discussion going so that we can all find each other and link up :~)

So, are you a UK hooper? If so, how did you first find out about hooping and what drew you to it? Where or how did you start to learn and where did you get your first hoop from?

Did you find that people looked at you oddly when you started or did they take it in their stride? I'm sure I got a few funny looks around here (conservative English village). I first started after seeing a chance video on YouTube of Sharna Rose dancing in the garden with her hoop. I so wanted to be able to do that. Never having had a dance lesson in my life and not being particularly fit or anything I was surprised at the vehemence with which I pursued this. My first hoop came from Sharna, but was too small for me so she made me a second.

After a couple of weeks of pulling all sorts of muscles and having no idea what I was really aiming at (apart from hand hooping which came easily) I found HoopGuy and went to his starter classes. And the rest is history as they say. Now I'm trying to get my villagers interested and that seems to be working, and trying to start up a regular meet in Leamington Spa too. My reasons for doing these things is that I would like hoopy friends to hoop with and as many of us in the UK are far apart, making my own seems like a good option. I try to get down to Diana Defries Sunday hoop club from time to time, but it's a long way, hence I thought it might work to get a more midlands based club going.

What's your story? Lets see how many UK hoopers we can find.

Hi Sue, I'm in Lincolnshire, and I am one lonely hooper! I started lessons with a friend, but she had to stop because she got a bad neck, and the tutor fell off the map, so now I just learn from here and practice alone! There is a hoop jam going on this saturday in derby I believe, but I cant make it, its too far!

If you know of any future events I would be interested!!
It's horrible being on your own. But who knows, you might inspire a friend to take it up with you. There is a hooping disco in Milton Keynes this Saturday run by Janine of Spirit Hoop Cake (http://spirithoopcake.co.uk). Is that any nearer? It's on a main line railway. 3-6pm.

And there is the UK hoop gathering this summer. Have you heard of that? http://www.ukhoopgathering.com/ for the web site.

And of course it's possible to learn just about everything from YouTube, DVD's and sites like this one.

Keep hooping.
Hi Sue, I'm Paul from Norwich. As far as I know there is nothing of the hoop world happening in my neck of the woods. I only took up the practice at the beginning of the year after discovering it in a workshop at a spiritual community down in Dorset. I managed to catch the first Hoop Club of the year in London and I ordered my first hoop from Diana of www.hoopswhirled.com. What really inspired me to take it up were the videos I found on YouTube such as those from sharnarose and lavinder5 which took it in my mind from being just a fun way to exercise to an exciting art form.

So maybe I will see you at Hoop Club next month or the UK Hoop Gathering - I've made a note in my diary :-)
Hi Paul

There used to be someone out your way, but I can't remember now. I think they were a hoop teacher, but may have moved.

Finding Sharna and Lavender5 is the perfect way to start! I think it's possible to learn everything from the Internet, but it makes it so much nicer to meet people. Did you meet Alan at the London Hoop Club? He's great. He came up to Leamington for our first meeting last month. How's the train situation from Norwich to Leamington?

I have to miss a lot of London Hoop Club meets because I am involved with theatre and Sundays are a regular rehearsal day. I only get a few of them free so they have to coincide with the club meets. Hence I decided to arrange the Leamington club for Saturdays. And I can't attend the UK Hoop Gathering, for which I'm gutted, because of another theatre commitment. But I'm sure our paths will cross at some point.
hey paul I used to live in norwich did you know there's a circus group running now? There might be some people there who hoop I moved to cambridge before it really took off but my mate who runs it tells me there's loads of people there now.
Hi Rin. I didn't know anything of circus skills in Norwich and I wouldn't naturally connect my hoop dance practice with the circus but it sounds like an interesting way to meet like-minded people; if you can give me a contact that would be great. Also Cambridge is not so far away so if you get anything going there at a weekend then let me know and I might just be able to fit it in.
there's cambcircus every sunday here in cambridge and the group in norwich is at St Gregory's every weds at 6-7.30pm. It costs three pounds to go. The woman who runs it is called caroline and she's really nice and friendly.
Thanks Rin. Yes at the moment I know of just me & Paul in Norwich, we are teaching ourselves. Hoopers can find us at the Circus skills workshops at St Gregorys.
hey, I'm a fellow UK hooper! i love all the online community stuff, but it is a shame there seem to be so few of us in the UK. I started hooping at the end of last summer after I saw it at a party. It was so inspiring, and I love how it seems to be such an inclusive community.
Is anyone from around Bristol? It'd be cool to find some hoopers round this neck of the woods :)
Hi Lulu

There are more of us than you might think, and I'm finding new hoopers all the time. I sell tape to someone in your area, so look out for them. Isn't there a play festival in your area in the summer time? Skully of Hyperloophoops.com (in Wales) talks about it. So you might meet someone there.

It is a neat thing to be able to do and it is a great community, probably because it's small. If there were hoopers on every corner in the UK then there would be no need to seek each other out I guess.

Nice to meet you on here. So far this has thrown up a few hoopers I didn't know about which is just why I started the thread.
I've just remembered (how could I forget) Sally Cox is down in your neck of the woods. She's teaching Body Hoops style classes. She was in the local paper a few weeks ago.

Are you on Tribe.net in the UK Hooping Tribe? If not, that's another place to go to hook up.
Hi Sue,

I'm down in Bournemouth. I started with with poi intially (through my boyfriend). There is actually quite big community of cirus trick people in the town and over the summer there is an informal gathering of spinners, hoopers, jugglers, drummers etc in the gardens. This is where I first saw hooping and when when boyfriend first suggested that I became a 'sexy hoop girl' I just laughed and thought no way.

A couple of months later, however, I picked up at hoop at the Southern Lights Festival and really enjoyed it, but did very little after that until several months later when I made my own hoop and got the HoopGirl DVD. I've been hooping ever since and was sooo excited when I discovered a wealth of hooping related vidoes on YouTube. Thanks to Safire, I was able to master some of the more difficult tricks through her clear teaching and breakdown of the moves. I too have found complete inspiration from Sharna and many others.

I know there are a couple of hoopers in Bournemouth, but I have yet to connect with them. I'm hoping to this summer.

For those of you who are interested there will be a Hoop Gathering at this years Southern Lights Festival http://www.southernlightsfestival.co.uk
