I never heard hoopettes! But I think it's cute lol!! I always say hoopers too... I get called Hula Girl a lot everywhere I hoop at..
I agree! It's cute. But what about the guys?
I have not heard that before. I tend to prefer gender=neutral language. I find it more inclusive. Plus, to me, feminizing a word is often a way of marginalizing that word. Take poet and poetess, for example. To me, to call someone a poetess is the same as calling them "Poet Lite", a version of a poet, only with a vagina...and I'm not keen on that. I don't think this marginalization applies to all languages (many romance languages consider their words to have a gender) but I do feel like it applies to English as it's spoken in the U.S. I, personally, would rather be an actor than an actress, a comedian than a comedienne, etc.

I've heard hoopers, hula hoopers and hoopdancers. I consider myself a hooper and a hoopdancer.
lol Caroleeena you crack me up sometimes..love your description of a poetess
Agreed!
Well its a cute name ( and someone here does post under that name). I agree with Caroleena in general and would prefer it remain unique to a performance persona rather than a general term.
Sounds a bit too chorus-girly for my taste-- it might fit some styles of hoop dance, but definitely not all.
I agree with the discomfort of feminizing words. I am a person first, who also happens to be female. So, yeah, what Caroleeena said. =)

But I am laughing at that particular word because if makes me think of Smurfette... like using the word "hoop" the way the Smurfs use the word "smurf".

"Hoopette had a hoopy good time at the hoopla with Papa Hooper and Vanity Hooper."

lmao

Remember Alvin and the Chipmunks?

Remember the Chipettes?

Hoopettes makes me think of them. I don't want to feel like a cartoon chipmunk in a skirt and bad 80's hair!

I'll have to agree with Caroleena about marginalizing/trivializing words.

As for other words, I like hoopaholic. I used that to refer to myself just the other day. :)
I call myself a hoophead-- pretty much the same idea!
I like that!

Which might be because I've had hoops flying at my head so often. ;)
