Hello! Very new hooper here. Any suggestion on which order the "tricks" are best learned? Obviously waist hooping first. I've gotten pretty good at waist hooping in both directions, turning, walking side to side (although NOT gracefully!), and thought I'd give chest hooping a try...not sure if that's the best thing to try to learn next. I know everybody is different, but I'm sure some things just "flow" together better.

Thanks for any suggestions!!

Chest hooping (no arms) was the second thing I learned, & then hooping off the body horizontally-- passing, lasso/halo (over the head). Oh, & lifts-- lifting the hoop from waist to overhead.

But as you say, everyone's different. Just soak up as many tutes as possible & play with everything, that's my advice, & let your body & the hoop tell you what feels fun/easy/intriguing enough to keep trying!

Oh yes-- since you can waist hoop in both directions, breaking the hoop (catching it as it comes to your far side, absorbing the motion, then sending it back in the opposite current) is a fun one to have in your arsenal-- it allows for a lot of dancy rhythm with a minimum of actual difficulty! You can play with turning while doing this too.

Have fun!
I wouls suggest that you learn lasso next (spinning the hoop above your head) and then putting the hoop on your waist for lasso. Then leanr to lift up from your waist to lasso. Those were basics I learned first. Then I started working on neck hooping and the shimmy from my waist to my neck. After I learned to chest hoop and then bring the hoop from my waist to chest hooping.
It's never the wrong time to try something. But just listen to your body and your spirit and go with what draws you. I personally didn't learn chest hooping until 5 or 6 months in, it can be very hard to get... but some people get it right away! So you never know. :-) My suggestion would be to work in some off body moves and some transitions so you can connect and play with what you know. Most of the following moves/tricks are fairly easy to get and add a lot of variety and play to your waist hooping. Have fun with it!

passing the hoop around your body (play with diff levels)
hand hooping over head (horz) and at side or in front (vert)
putting the hoop on the body and talking it off
breaks (at the waist and off body)
the weave
the revolving door
skipping with the hoop
etc
I would try lifts next, from hooping around your waist to bringing the hoop up into halo, and then back down to continue hooping around the waist..have fun with everything!
peace and love..
yeahhhh i always teach the lift up from waist to above the head AND the drop down from above the head to waist...watch the tutorials cause there are tons...
Thanks everybody! I'm going to print all of these suggestions and give 'em all a try. I think chest hooping will be put off a little while. :)
Hi. My first and best recommendation is SaFire's class series of course. However if that is not possible, I found these videos before I found SaFire and they are how I learned some of the beginner moves. I think the order they teach the moves in works well for beginners. Four volumes done by Fire Groove:

Vol. 4

I've watched their videos, and yes they're pretty good! Although, I don't know if I've seen all those you've listed, so thanks so much for the info! I'm hoping to ask for some of SaFire's tutorials for Christmas. :)
