I am trying to learn some breaks and reversals. I don't know the names for them and I'm having a hard time finding any videos. Can any one help?

Hmm I'm not much help sorry...but if you have the $ safire offers a class just on breaks and reversals!
There are no tutorials about that on Youtube, but it's not so hard to figure this out, almost every move can be broken or reversed. Sometimes you need the help of another hand to break, sometimes not. Just try it out. A smaller lighter hoop makes them much easier to learn.
Yep, Eternal Voyageur is right. I've been in Safire's breaks/reversals class for a while and the most helpful part was simply realizing the multitude of opportunities to reverse the hoop. Go through your different moves and pay attention to the hoop's location. Ask, how can I grab, slap, or move the hoop? I've been playing around with off-body reversals this week using different body parts. My favorite is reversing the weave with my foot. I was inspired by this video of Beth Lavinder. She does some great reversals off her knees and shoulders.

Some nice reversals here:

This girl does a lot of different reversals, and she makes it look really cool:

There is also a video titled "Solace - Celebrating Summer" which I cannot embed here because "This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions. "
Anyway, in the beginning she breaks hand hooping on her knees, it looks really nice.
The second vid is Victoria and she is from Alabama. She is sooooo amazing. She has recently taken some time off hooping cause she just had a baby!!!! She hooped up til late in her pregnancy and has only made one vid since the baby's birth. I do miss her presence in the hoop community, but I know when she returns, she is gonna set the bar for something amazing!!!!!
I meet this Lovely hoop lady @ the Superhooper workshop in Birmingham, AL. She is an amazing hooper and is super sweet! I love her breaks & reversals, you can tell she has worked hard on them. :)
omg I remember megz video (the top one) from a while ago when I was just beginning hooping. I was just amazed at her skillz! Now im getting there myself, such great inspiration! :)
Ok, I've thought of it this way:

* You can break and reverse. You can create different effects depending on how many times you repeat the move before breaking it again (if at all).

* You can also reverse, reverse, reverse (in quick succession). When I do this, in my mind I play the sound of a DJ moving the record back and fro (is that called scratching ?) Know that sound ? It's like you are replaying a tiny part of a move backwards and forwards.

* You can just break, and not reverse. You stop the movement for a moment, and continue.

* You can experimenting with breaking with different parts of the body. While hooping off body you can break without any additional body part (just stopping the hoop with your hand movement, requires a light hoop and good control), or breaking with the other hand (either openly or so that it's barely noticeable), or by bumping it against your shoulder, torso, or even a knee or foot.

* Try trapping the hoop under an armpit, bumping it off a body part, just grabbing and releasing, or pushing it away with the palm. This will make the reversals sharper, slower, or more dramatic.

* You can break some moves in several places. Like the vortex, you can bring it down just till the chest, and reverse and go back up again. Or you can go all the way down to the waist, and then reverse.
What a great analysis, E.V.! I've learned a lot from Safire's Breaks & Reversals & I've done variations instinctively, but this is a beautifully distilled analysis that really helps me see more possibilities!

A few breaks that I love:
Off body vertical underarm breaks (if you go to Stina Sparkle's Double Axle Weave tute she discusses the technique as a warm up) http://www.hoopcity.ca/video/double-axle-weave-tutorial

Fishtail breaks from overhead horizontal (bring the hoop down & catch it without grabbing it, by putting the opposite hand in at a "stop" angle-- kind of hard to describe, but fun!)

I love love love "stirring" break-reverses-- when you have the hoop horizontal, bending over it & keeping it going with a stirring motion inside, let your stirring arm move out to the side, then when it gets all the way out reverse the motion. You can switch hands or just reach across with the same hand. It makes for a dramatic side-to-side swooping motion and it's actually very easy! I do it when I'm tired & need a stretch.

By the way, these last two I learned from Safire's class. I do recommend taking it if you've got the bucks!
Is there a video of the fishtail break? Sounds cool.

I love the idea of breaks and reversals but I haven't found a way to make them totally organic yet; I need to practice more.
Sorry but the only tutorial I know is Safire's lesson... I really do recommend that class!

The breaks will feel completely natural after more practice. I find that they really help you keep the beat when hooping, either fast or slow, on body or off... I love 'em!
