Hi everyone

I fell in love with hooping a couple of years ago at a trance party, and i have wanted to learn ever since. I did attend one workshop which made me want to learn even more, but it made me aware of my complete and utter inhabilty to co-ordinate my body... and i feel will prevent me from ever being able to hoop like some of you guys!

I notice a lot of people who hoop also have an interest (or background) in dance. Ive never in my life had any co-ordination at *all*!.

Im really not exageratting when i say - that my co-ordination is *terrible*. I cant even do an aerobics class because i am just all over the place! At school i was never allowed to be a dancer in any of the performances because i was so rubbish - "two left feet"!! :)

My question is - do you think with the right amount of practice and determination, anyone can learn these things? or do some people either have it and some dont? I am totally willing to practice practice practice! (and very lucky as i have a few months off travelling so i can put the time into it too!)

But, at the same time.. if its out of my control then maybe I should not attempt it? Or maybe it isnt out of my control!?

Any thoughts/ideas on this would be so greatly appreciated!

:)

Let me put it to you this way....if I can do it, then anybody can do it! It's all about what you're willing to put into it (your practice).
really? Thanks TW

I am willing to put *lots* and lots into the practice :)

Ive been watching SaFires "Love the Process" video - very inspiring!

I'm really not very coordinated myself... I couldn't even keep my hoop on my hips 2 months ago. I still brace for the occasional bruise or face check when I'm attempting new motions... but eventually, with repetition, things start to click. With enough enthusiasm and determination, you can certainly learn anything. :)
Thanks so much for your reply Leighann - thats really encouraging! I tried to watch your video (im interested to see your hooping now ;O)) but the computer I'm on is too slow so ill check it out another time

One more thing - I naturally hoop to the right, even though im right handed. Its impossible for me to hoop anti clockwise - will this cause problems in the long run? The teacher I had for the workshop said I should really learn to hoop to the left as i will have problems later on when i learn tricks!

It just seems very very unnatural to do it that direction - but then again, maybe something else i need to teach my body to do

Thanks again for the feedback - once ive got started i will post some videos too ;)

Hiya!! Im so excited for you! Trust me you can learn to hoop ;) I do believe that safire never had any dancing experience and look how lovely her dancing is!! Also you dont have to hoop a certain direction....it doesnt matter that your right handed. I think what that instructor might have meant was that it is really important to be able to hoop both directions just because it keeps your movements open and your body balanced! It will always feel awkward in one direction but its still good to practice :) goodluck!!
Yeah, yeah, I'm editing my response because my initial reaction was "wtf?" but, maybe your teacher meant something different, like SS pointed out...anyways, no. You shouldn't have to hoop to the left to learn tricks. So, if that's what she actually meant, um, no. Buzzer noise. You'll be just fine.

SaFire's dominant current is to the right. Doesn't look like she's having any trouble with tricks to me. ;)
yep i think i misunderstood what she was saying although i do now see why i need to train my body to be able to do *both* sides!!
I sympathise with you. I have shocking co-ordination in established dance practices despite having gained some dance qualifications (in 19th & 20th social dancing, passed by the skin of my teeth!) whilst I was training for something. I was always going left when everyone was going right! It was because I was having such little fun in dance class that I took up hooping. I just wanted to have something special for myself.

My focus was always on the music and really listening to it, I never cared what anyone thought of my moves because I was having so much fun disappearing in the hoop. Then after some persistance and practice onlookers would ask me if I was a dancer! I felt really chuffed that someone said that because in the hoop we can all dance.

Enjoy the music, enjoy moving your body and whatever it is you seek you may find you already have. Keep on having fun and enjoy your playlist even more.

In terms of direction, with practice what was once unfamiliar will become familiar... I can almost promise that! It felt very bizarre when I started but after a while I can't tell the difference and have no real preference for direction.

:o)
I just started hooping in October and have no dance background or anything for that matter and was thinking exactly what you are when I got my hoop. I also couldnt keep the hoop around my waist for the life of me and was very discouraged considering everyone in the class that I was in could at least waist hoop. I was almost ready to give up but decided no I'm gonna keep trying and not give up cuz I usually always give up pretty much on everything. My advice to you is that anyone can learn to hoop for sure and probably lots of people on here are going to say "if I can do it then anybody can" which is totally true if your willing to put the work in! I can now keep the hoop on my waist and do a few tricks however with tons of practice. For some people it just may take longer to catch on like it did me where as my best friend gets some tricks after 2 weeks, and takes me 3 weeks haha but ya. I think you definitely have potential if your willing to be dedicated whether you have coordination or not, you'll feel whats right for you while you hoop whereas some people its different and of course most importantly just have fun with it! :0)
If you think you´re pretty uncoordinated, you should see me. I´m SO completely uncoordinated, it´s tragic. I also was never allowed back into my dance class because I was such a terrible dancer and messed up a dress rehearsal. Hooping sort of came naturally to me, but with a lot of the tricks, I have a lot of difficulty because I´m so uncoordinated. With lots of practice though, you can definitely get it. Just keep doing it and practicing and your body will start to understand what it needs to do, and just go with the flow. Also, I´m righthanded and I hoop to the right, it really makes no difference other than that you do things opposite of the left hoopers. SaFire hoops to the right too! I´m trying to learn how to hoop to the left as well though, because it´d be nice to put some breaks and reversals into my moves. I´ve only been hooping for two months, you´ll start to get the hang of it, trust me! :)
I can hoop with 5 hoops but I can't pour juice.

There's hope for everyone...
Wow girlies thanks SO much for the response/support. I actually feel so excited reading all these replies..

Ive always just accepted that I was rubbish at dance and therefore avoided anything remotley to do with it. but hooping just seems different to me

Janine - I love what you said "we can all dance in the hoop" it actually gives me goosebumps and MIss Lucious - I will be just like you i imagine, spending lots more time to learn moves . In my class there were a couple of girlies who got it straight away.. but thats cool i guess, a challenge is good!

And as you say - enjoyng the playlist. I have got some songs in mind that I would love to be able to hoop too.... it would be so cool to just do it freely :)

Stephanie - your post was very encouraging, too. Like i said, as a kid i was never allowed to dance in any school shows as i was sooo rubbish - perhaps thats why ive avoided anything like it all my life (im 28 now)

And Safire - hehe very encouraging too!

Ok thanks SOOOO much for the responses, I am going to come back to this thread everytime i feel the need (ie if i feel like quitting!) but right now i am sooooo excited!!!
