World Hoop Day falls on 11-11-11 this year, and 11-11 any year is Rememberance Day in Canada, a day to remember and celebrate veterans. I'm looking for a creative way to honour both days
Since I don't normally celebrate Rememberance Day, I thought "Whoowee! That means I can host a daytime event on 11-11 cause everyone has the day off!" After performing at a veterans centre a few weeks back I'm thinking it's a little rude to those who do celebrate.
Anyone have ideas for creatively combining the two events?

There's probably going to be many opportunities to celebrate Veteran's day, earlier in the day.
If you have a connection with the veteren's center (you said you performed there) maybe explain to them what WHD is and get them on board with donations to WHD cause! PLUS WHD is part of a bigger picture, an initiative to spread good fun to kids who need it. Perhaps they would love that concept.
OR maybe plan your event later afternoon or evening.
Someone in my community is wanting to celebrate WHD so I sent emails to all my hoopy contacts, so we can work together. Here's two examples of polarized viewpoints: One person responded unfavourably: said planning a WHD on this day is 'innapropriate'. Another opposite viewpoint ("let's go for it- the veterans go and drink at the legion after the 11/11celebrations, so hoopers should have fun too" ~not a direct quote~)
If we do an event, I almost feel it *could* be kept 'underground' so as not to offend anyone and possibly cause closeminded negative viewpoints to be created towards the hooping community.
Now, personally (and these views may not reflect the hooping community or my community) I feel that Veterans Day is a product of war, and war is bad. (too simplistic? maybe) And Hooping is good, so let's celebrate something good. I celebrate love. The more goodness we put into the world, the better it is.
As for a creative solution: Maybe the military should adopt hooping into its training regime. Or the current world leaders could have hooping sessions before important meetings. You never know what goodness can come from a nice hooping session.
I'd love to hear more on this from others!

Permalink Reply by Sweet Sisi on October 1, 2011 at 12:29pm I never thought of that. Hm. Tough one. I think it would be possible to set up a booth during the day to collect donations for the WHD cause if one took the focus from how much fun hooping is for us, to how much fun it brings to children around the world, some of whom are affected by war.
And then maybe a world hoop day night event/party for fun?
