So I've been hooping less than a month (consecutive days). I've gotten the concept of chest hooping and watched tutorial after tutorial on it and sometimes can get it more than others and have moved to a polypro as well but can't seem to make it look as easy as I see everywhere else. I don't understand why my body needs to move so much more than everyone elses and why I haven't been able to chest hoop while not turning around. please help! This is one video and I have others on my actual page. I'm thinking it has something to do with my posture and somehow what my legs and butt are doing. any input would be really great since this has been really frustrating to me.

Permalink Reply by Holly Roberts on January 30, 2012 at 5:15am I know you've watched lots of tutorials, but someone shared this one the other day here by Hoopalicious, and even though, like you, I already had the basic idea of chest hooping, it really helped me a lot. As soon as I watched it, I worked it and noticed a lot of improvement.

She specifically mentions that if you have to keep turning your body to do it, that's okay, and she tells you how to slowly get away from that until you can stand still and do it. For me, that was just the right thing to say because I was like, "Oooh, that's ME! I have to keep turning!" She also explains the movement a little differently than other explanations I've seen, and her way really worked for me.
It also helped me to use my larger hoop. Everyone is different, but one that's just a little heavier and bigger made it easier for me to get the movement right. (Or much closer to right-- I've not mastered this by any means but improving with each practice!)

Permalink Reply by Kelsey Donaldson on January 30, 2012 at 6:54am I have found that spreading my feet a little wider, bending my knees and shifting my weight side to side helps you feel the hoop and allows you to push it from side to side rather than popping with your chest so much. Also, a heavier hoop helps a lot while learning because you feel the hoop more and it carries itself a little. It is a lot more forgiving with your movements than a polypro.
One other thing, as ridiculous as it sounds, closing my eyes helped me a lot. It made me focus on feeling the hoop so much and helped me understand how every movement pushed a the hoop a different way.

Permalink Reply by mandy - hooping hurricane on January 30, 2012 at 8:33am To turn off "what your legs and butt are doing", try sitting on a stool without a back or, if possible, on the floor.
That helped me A LOT with concentrating just on my upper body.
Good luck, keep practicing and one day you'll be able to chest hoop perfectly :)
Permalink Reply by Leahtard623 on January 30, 2012 at 5:35pm that's a great idea actually! :)
I've been hooping for almost 2 years and I still cant chest hoop while in a fixed position. I have to turn with my hoop to this day. It took me months of practice to even figure out chest hooping in general so dont get discouraged. It just takes time, practice, and patience.
When you first try it out your movements will be super exaggerated and it will look/feel goofy at first but with practice you get use to the movement and it becomes more effortless.
Some people found it easier to get vertical chest hooping first which helped them figure out chest hooping.
Also learning chest hooping with polypro is going to be a lot harder than learning with a larger heavier hoop.

Permalink Reply by Laura DiFilippo on January 30, 2012 at 2:35pm Chest hooping was a very difficult trick for me to get. I still tend to turn with the hoop. I am also in the process of learning to chest hoop in my opposite current. The 1st video that was posted is super helpful. My tips are to just focus on pushing with your shoulders and looking at how the hoop is moving. Also, I suggest practicing with a regular hoop first and getting that before practicing with your polypro hoop.
Your led hoop in your picture is super pretty! What kind of hoop is it?
Permalink Reply by Leahtard623 on January 30, 2012 at 5:34pm it's a mood hoop. i just ordered the atomic pro! :) and thanks for your input. i am far away from even attempting my other current lol i've tried and it was a mess.

You are using muscles that normaly don't get used that much and as you build that muscle your chest hooping will get smoother and smoother.
