I have made collapsible hoops before but they've been 100 PSI.  A girl wants me to make her 160 PSI 36" infinity style collapsible hoop.  I thought it would be no problem because I know how to make them with 100 PSI.  I have made this hoop three times now and it is really starting to cost me financially, and to be frank, it's making me angry.
When I make 100 PSI collapsible hoop I cut the hoop to the size that I want and directly across from the first cut I put another one.  I then put a connector on both ends, and wham-bam there's a collapsible hoop.   Easy and simple enough.
The first time making this 160 hoop there were gaps where the connectors are when the hoop is collapsed.  This means when the hoop is fully collapsed it looks as if the tubing is going to pop off the connector
The second time I tried to make the hoop I cut off one of the barbs on each end of the connectors because I thought maybe the problem was that the connectors were too long.  Yea, when I collapsed the hoop it popped off.
The third time I made it just the same way I made it the first time and once again there was a huge gap.
I have had to buy more tubing and now I am out of connectors.  Any advice would be great.

I think the problem is in the actual size of the hoop. 36" is not very big, so when you collapse it in half the two little circles are quite small and don't have enough space, there is lot of tension. I had same problem with bit bigger hoop, but over 200 psi 1" tubing. When collapsed, the gaps were not pretty and I was worried it would fly open any minute.
Maybe you can suggest to her to make one from 100 psi?
Agreed. I believe that 160 psi is just too stiff to make an infinity hoop at 36 inches. I would either make her a regular (non- infinity) 160 or make her a 100 psi infinity. But give her the option of which she wants before you make it.
i have to disagree with the other responders. I make collapsibles that small and smaller with 160psi tubing all the time.

what connectors are you using?
I use Genova connectors.
simple! just a case of using the wrong connectors.

find the lasco brand. you have to dremel or shave off the nubs in the middle but your quality factor in your hoops will increase dramatically.
Thank you so much! You are such a lifesaver. I have heard of these Lasco connectors before and I looked at Lowe's but I couldn't find any that had two 'male' ends. Only ones with three 'prongs' or a 'male' and 'female' end. Would they possibly be at Home Depot? Or Ace Hardware?
I get mine at Ace Hardware. They are a little more expensive, and the time it takes to sand the nubs off ( i use a dremel) is a big pain. But once you try them, you won't go back!

they hold the connection so well. When you collapse the hoop and it's in the collapsed position there are barely any gaps, when you open it back up there are no gaps!

They are a lifesaver!!!!!!!!!! the time and expense are beyond worth it
Can you find these on the Ace Hardware website? I have tried googling it but can't find the right ones. If you can find one, would you post it please?? Thanks!
....and... I found them... on-line anyway. I will check around for them at Ace this week. Do you sand all of the nubs off? Not smooth though right? You still leave a bit of the edge? I tried making the pull apart version too, but it will come apart when I hoop hard, even though it has bungee inside.
there are nubs in the middle, sand them off.

the ridges on the ends, leave those
Very helpful... thanks!
I have made a really sweet break down collapsible hoop that has snap buttons instead of bungee cord. You can get a neat little kit for making them from spinterz.com. It comes with everything you need plus he has a very helpful tutorial on youtube that shows exactly how to make the hoop. It works really well, is tidy looking and is a very secure connection. I have found these to be the best collapsible hoop (although I only have my own creations to compare to)
Good luck!
