Okay, so I've been hooping almost a year now...still in love with the circle & I think I will never fall out. I even have a hand full of friends that are now addicted as well. :) One of my (non-hooping) friends owns a shop downtown & has asked me to come to this months first friday to demonstrate hooping exercise & dance. This is a event our town has every month (on the 1st friday of the month) where local artists, musicians & performers are at the different downtown businesses showing off their "stuff". Of course I said yes because I see it as a wonderful opportunity to introduce our town to hooping! A few of my hooping friends will be there (he said bring as many as I want). As is it seems we will just be having a hoop jam downtown at his shop (which is called Oconee Outfitters- he sells bikes, canoes, kayaks, frisbees, etc). he's all about getting the people in our town active.
If you had this opportunity- what would you do? I've got a "public friendly" playlist together, a few people coming to hoop with me, even a few hoops to sell & to share. But I've never done anything like this. We've had jams at the park- but it's secluded & not so much in the public eye. Just seeking a bit of advice on how I can take the best advantage of this situation. :)

Engage people by offering them a hoop to try. Groups of people will walk by, try to get them spinning and laughing with a mini lesson.
Have flyers or cards to hand people so they know where/when to hoop (classes and jams) or to buy a hoop.
Be prepared with a snazzy 15 second hoop demo so that when people say "Let's see what you can do" you have something to show off. Use some tricks you always nail nicely flowed together that end with a flourish. Bringing the hoop from knees to neck, then a couple of vortexes, a bit of larrisa and ending on a weave jump through with a pose is one combo I've used. Not going to win Hooping Idol, but it wows the crowd.
As the leader/spokeperson of the group, you probably won't hoop too much - not in flow, at any rate. Be prepared to talk while hooping and to stop to teach people things. Bust out a trick, then break it down for folks who are keen to try.
Wear something that makes you feel terrific - whether it's a crazy costume or your most comfy t-shirt - so that you don't have to worry about how you look. Nothing worse than feeling self-conscious about your clothes, hair, or whatever.
Smile. That alone will make everyone (including yourself) enjoy whatever you are doing.

Thanks so much for your advice Tink! We don't really have regular hoop jams where everyone shows, it's pretty sporadic at best right now. usually just 3-4 people at most too. BUT we are trying to change that by- getting more people interested! The demo thing is great! I'm not too self conscious on my looks, but what to wear has been the big talk this week since it's supposed to get to 100 that day (& everyday this week). At least we can be hot stuff without even trying. :) As for flyers, i may print up some little slips to hand out with here & hooping.org on it, maybe link to the ACE article on hooping too. There's nowhere to buy hoops except from me, no classes...we're a really small town. And with the college out for summer it seems like it got even smaller, lol.
