Do you NOT wash your hair? Advice for a shampoo addict kicking the habit.

Some people may not agree, but I am trying to not wash my hair. I have a myriad of reasons, but mainly because my scalp and hair quickly becomes addicted to shampoo.

For years, I've been washing every other day, but by the middle/end of day two my hair is lank and oily. If I washed my hair every day, then by the end of that first day it already looks like it needs a wash. I don't want to be washing my hair twice a day. Because then if I washed it twice a day, would I soon need to wash it three times??? Vicious cycle.

My hair has been the bane of my existence for years. I was happiest with it when it was dreaded up and not having to wash it much at all, and now I like it short, but the washing thing is really driving me batty. For example, if I have something important where I would like clean shiny hair but it happens to fall on day two of not washing, I'm all like, "What am I going to do?" So usually I would go three days without washing my hair and suffer through a bad, lanky hair day you wouldn't believe, because if I washed it too soon, well lordy, I would need to wash it again even sooner.

So, I've decided to give the theory that if you don't wash your hair, it will eventually clean itself. I've been about a week without washing it, and it isn't as gross as I had expected. My hair had been looking about as greasy as an old "day two" day. My scalp feels better. But today I want to wash it so badly! I want to smell the pretty smell of shampoo and have the fluffiness that only comes from a wash.

So any tips from non-hair washers out there? If you gave up shampoo, how long did it take for your hair to look clean again?

By the way, after you separate the egg yolk you can froth up the white and use it as a tightening/brightening face mask. It's also really good for scars :)

Rushes off to the kitchen to whisk up a face mask!! OOOoo! *grins*  Thanks~

I have a question for my no-poo people...

I went poo free using baking soda and acv and I LOVED it!  I used this method for about 6 months and then I had my hair colored... after just one wash I noticed that it significantly stripped the color so I went back to  "color safe" shampoo. I really miss how my hair felt and looked when I using the bs/ acv.

The questions:  Any suggestions for cleaning hair that won't strip the color out it?  Do any of you have colored hair and use the BS/ACV  method? If so, what's your experience?

Any tips and/or advice will be greatly appreciated. ♥

no shampoo is the best EVER!!! a little over a year ago i decided that i was just gonna only use water ot wash my hair with. and it got SO oily and gross. luckily it was finals and i go to art school so no one thought twice until i saw my mom and she was like man whens the last time you washed your hair (lol). So then I decided to go with baking soda and apple cider vinegar and man, its amazing! imediately my hair was so freaking clean i couldn't believe it. Now (and for the past year or so) I have been washing my hair every two to three days by putting a tablespoon of BS in a cup of hot water and rinsing my hair and massaging my scalp. i rinse it and then do a tablespoon of ACV in water and apply that to the ends of my hair and rinse. I haven't noticed that much of a difference from when I did use shampoo and conditioner but it does feel great to go buy 'shampoo' and have it cost about a dollar every 2 months. plus with being vegan i always had to worry about what was in my shampoo and where i bought it, etc. and now no worries at all! I am a HUGE advocate for this! everyone should do it!!

although my hair never smells fruity and delicious anymore it doesn't bother me. i think my boyfriend just doesnt put his nose on my head anymore, haha

I do not wash my hair very often at all. - I'll shower and just not get it wet. i have very thick and curly hair and a very sensitive scalp. When my head gets wet, even if no shampoo is used, it's very itchy and annoying. When I do wash my hair I only use conditioner to avoid knotting.

When i did use shampoo it made my hair become oilier faster. I haven't been using shampoo for about 2 years now and i love it

Alrighty girls im a shampoo-aholic, so i now use sulfate free and such. but I noticed a bunch of girls on here saying their hair gets oils. I'm just posting a friendly reply to say if you hate greasy oily hair use baby powder. Yes thats right BABY POWDER. Oldest trick in the book been doin it for years. I shower every other day and wehn that 2nd day limpness/oily galore kicks in just use baby powder rub on your hands and then rub it in and voila... no more greasy grease. works like a charm. I have super curly unruly hair and it worls everytime for me. just an FYI

Do no poo method!! one thing though make sure you use ORGANIC apple cider vinegar.  I suggest Bragg's raw unpasteurized and I only use 2 tbsp to a full cup of warm water plus the essential oils.  It'll last a really long time...so this method is much cheaper than regular shampooing.  I've been doing it now for a little over 2 months and I love it I actually dont use baking soda because I heard it can really dry your hair out especially for girls, I use pure castile bar soap.  the brand I use is Dr. Bronner's peppermint bar it's organic and has really good essential oils for your hair like coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc... if you use the liquid version make sure you dilute it because it's concentrated but Dr. Bronner even started an organic conditioning rinse.  The amazing thing about Dr. Bonner's is that it's an 18-1 use soap...dr bronners website FAQ You can use it pretty much for anything even laundry, dishes.. and it smells amazing and wakes up your senses...I wash my hair once a week now and it also feels thicker and I believe it's actually been growing faster.  I put a couple drops of rosemary and jojoba oil in my organic apple cider rinse, sometimes lavender as well.    also when my hair is wet a put a couple drops of jojoba oil on the ends not too much or you dont want your hair to look greasy (sometimes I do this the second day after showering) also what I noticed is my hair dries EXTREMELY quick now, I don't use a blowdryer anymore usually within 5-10 minutes of getting out my hair is dry which is unheard of because my hair is down to the middle of my back. Also pat dry your hair, dont rub it in the towel this will help with split ends.   Hope this helped a little! It def changed my life and all of my friends are jealous I don't have to wash my hair everyday like them and I still have nice looking hair! Good luck!!

oh p.s. yes in the beginning you're going to have some greasy hair days but just throw your hair up or wear a hat, because it'll be worth it =]

I'm super interested in trying what you're talking about. could you possibly explain it in short the things i'll need ? i'd appreciate it so much lol

Sulfate free, paraben free, and silicone free shampoos and conditioners have lately been making their way into the store shelves! I highly reccommend :) Usually these products were more available on the salon level and were super expensive, but now they're priced just like every other shampoo and do not contain all that unnecessary gunk to wash and condition your hair. Garnier Fructis makes a set that is free of sulfates, paraben, and silicones as well as is 95% biodegradable (some figure like that). Also, just reduce washing to once or twice a week, it's true that over-washing strips your scalp and hair of the natural oils and it then realizes that and produces even more oil to compensate for the loss. Hope zis helps :)

have you tried an organic shampoo/conditioner? if you have an all natural store (we have one called natures emporium) they often have really good, sulfate free, paraben free natural shampoo. that might help you! it feels really good. :)
