My mom works at a children's musuem, and during the winter they occasionally do a program called let's get physical in the gym to get kids running around and active. She asked me if I could bring in a bunch of my hoops for one of the days they do this and teach a few tricks to kids. I'd love to do it, but I was wondering...what are easy tricks to teach? I don't want anything to complicated or hard to pick up for kids. I figure hooping above the head, maybe picking the hoop up and dropping it down...any other good tricks? It wouldn't really be a class, just a thing kids (and parents) can drop in for as long as they want while they are at the museum

hehe yeah my little neighbor taught me that....waist to neck hooping in about a minute:D
Well now, Sierra is a bit of a prodigy for her age, especially in those first videos... & she has a hooping mama too. But in general kids are more flexible & energetic, & perhaps most important of all, less inhibited than we are!

And yeah, Baxter really should have manned up & wore the pink sparklies. Shame all over him.
He wore the pants they gave him to wear and I got the pics to prove it! I'll see if I can't locate that and upload it! It is worth it!
What age are the kids? Very little ones often haven't quite got the body awareness to catch on quickly, but school age kids are usually really into it! Vertical hand hooping is good because often those who can't pick up waist hooping easily can get it right away & have a positive hoop experience. Also passing the hoop around the body, though that one's prone to flying hoops!
the revolving door : )
Oh yes, good one!
kids seem to have amazing hand strength
The musuem is for kids up to age 12, I think there are other activities for the little little kids so...I'm guessing like 4 and up maybe?
In my experience 4 is right on the margin-- some 4's get it right away & others get frustrated & lose interest. I'd say 5-9 are the magic years when nearly all of them love it... after that some kids get embarrassed. But so long as you have a few other choices besides body hooping you should keep them all happy.

For really little kids or ones who just aren't into the regular hooping, I recommend "hoopscotch"-- lay out a few hoops on the ground side by side & let the kids hop or jump from one to the next.

If you need a little more variety & challenge to keep the older kids' interest, it's fun to have them play catch with a beach ball while waist hooping!
My sons' favorite trick is rolling hoop on the floor and having the hop roll back to them.
Yep, for toddlers/pre-schoolers it's more about rolling and jumping through the hoop than spinning it. I made a bunch of 1/2 in hoops and my daughter is really innovative at constructing shapes/playhouses out of them.
