Hello Hoopers!
I live in Pensacola, Florida. Our beach footwear is officially flip flops. You wear flip flops to the beach, and once you are in the sand you take them off. It's the local law, lol. Well, I am having an issue with beach hooping for this reason. I have no problem hooping in the sand with my flops off. I am thinking for special situations like hooping at the pavilions, on decks, etc. ( basically, the areas right before the sand starts - which is usually concrete or decking.) Now this issue is especially pressing to me now, because I am attending the Hangout Festival next weekend in Gulf Shores. There are something like 5 stages, and it is likely a couple will be in a parking lot, not on the sand. When I hoop in flip flops, or do anything active really - I tend to hurt myself. Namely, my flip flop will move to the side, and my foot will end up on the ground - and the thong part of the flop is now weirdly stretched between my toes and the ground (if that makes sense). This can be painful, and it also makes my hooping a little more awkward because I am worrying about it the entire time, and also just because I slide around in them - making jumps and other things much less fluid. I am looking for a flip flop alternative - something light, comfortable, very easy to take on and off for sand to parking lot transitioning, etc - not tennis shoes! Or even just a really good flip flop that you have that doesn't do that to you. Currently I own Rainbows and Reefs, which are really good quality. I believe this is just a flip flop tendency. Hope you can help!

Ooh, I get to talk about my favorite shoes!!

Vibram Five Fingers are the single most amazing set of footwear I have ever put my toes into. I'd recommend the classic for you, if you're used to wearing flipflops. They take a little bit of getting used to, since your toes are separated, but they're AMAZING. It's like going barefoot with protection. They're super extra grippy on the bottom because of their fancy construction. They're great in the water, and you can throw them in the wash. When I got sick of stepping on/being pinched by crabs in NJ, I threw these on to swim in the ocean. I wear them almost everywhere (I actually have the Sprint, because I knew I'd be in the ocean a lot.) and they are the best.

Permalink Reply by Ashash on May 13, 2011 at 9:57pm I know it sounds stupid, but Ugg style boots are perfect for the beach.
They're easy to get on/off, light weight, and you can walk on the beach with them without getting any sand in your shoes.
If that's kinda sweaty toe overkill for you, Old Navy makes these rubber ones with a strap across the back to help keep you from sliding out.

I have a very similar pair from Forever 21, but made from faux-leather. They're really comfy to wear and stay on my feet better than flip flops.( Which I cannot wear at all without falling because I've got a gnarly case of pigeon toeness and I end up walking with my heels on the ground but my toes still in the flip flop)
I've also got gold sandals that have long laces to wrap around my ankles like so:

I've got a pair of these sandals from Target. The back keeps them on, unlike flip flops, but they're still easy to slip on and off. You don't have to undo the buckles. The only thing is they're super flat and not padded so after a while your feet may hurt if you're on concrete the whole time. I did a lot of hooping in grass with them and they were fine, but I imagine they'd get a little uncomfortable on cement. Those ones from Old Navy Ashash posted about look awesome though. I'm checking those out now.
