I found this fantastic picture on Pinterest this morning and would really like to try to make a hoop like this for an Earth Day performance. I'm a pretty crafty gal, but this is foreign territory for me. I'm curious how YOU would go about it. What would you make the petals from? They'd have to be sturdy/stiffy enough to stay upright, but not too heavy.

Thoughts?

Whatever fabric you use for the petals, you could starch them to make them stiff. You could also make some sort of wire frame in them if the starch wasn't enough. I totally wanna make one just cuz! :)

Cute!  I would use craft foam--the kind you can get at Michael's.  I would also consider creating a wire frame for the petals (somewhat like how fire hoops have spokes coming out of them) so they could sit nicely even when the hoop isn't spinning.  Or, I would rig two different sized hoops together, like luna breeze's dream catcher hoop, and let the petals sit between the two hoops.  Post pictures when you've created it!!  :)

I agree (and it looks like craft foam to me in the pic). Maybe floral wire?

This is such a great idea! I would say maybe foam or felt for the petals. Foam would actually probably be a bit better, stay stiffer than felt and also be lighter. You could probably just buy pieces of 9.5x11 sheets of foam and cut the petals, then maybe use a few strips of a strong fabric, or just one long one, to enclose the hoop and attach the petals all together. Hand sewing would probably be the best, but the biggest pain, but I suppose some kind of glue or you could possibly find a way to sew it on a machine... It also looks like there are some larger pink petals, maybe those would be a fabric so that they would rise and fall with the movement of the hoop, which would be pretty cool.
Actually, now that I'm looking at the picture and thinking about it, I dont know that encasing it the way I explained would keep the petals sticking straight out while it was still, the way she is holding it. But maybe it would work if it was tight enough to the hoop. Maybe some wire keeping the petals up (possibly a ring of wire a few inches larger than the hoop somehow incorporated within the petals might keep it up. This is so fun, I hope you can figure out how to get it the way you imagine it!

I agree with the felt petals! Its stiff enough that it could hold the shape but will also look prettier then foam. If your spinning with the hoop the petals will fly up to begin with so you might not need to worry about them being stiff

They really do look like they might be made of crafting foam like some of those stickers and things are made of...  That might be a bit heavy tho right hmm. Well probably no more heavy than a fitness hoop of 3 to 5 lbs. Figure whatever it is has to be fairly aerodynamic tho - to save money and frustration I'd try a mini version first or even micro mini just to see it if will spin in whatever way you decide to go with it.  (Make  a micro mini hoop yourself and add your ideas to it just to see... if you can finger/wrist spin it without too much drama/trauma it should be all good for anything else.)  Please show us what you come up with =)

Here is a less fancy but still beautiful flower hoop. I agree it looks like craft foam. Maybe you can send the girl in this video a message and she can tell you what she did. http://youtu.be/JRrA757hcAI

Lovely! Thanks for the tip!

I think you could accomplish the same thing with bristol/poster board which would be a lot lighter than craft foam. You could use a piece of fabric on the inside (the pink strip she has) to fold over the hoop and attach to the petals to hold them in place.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I'm a lot better at gluing than sewing. ;-)

Speaking of creative hoops—you should check out Yavia's shamrock hoop. Ahhhmazing. This is her. She says she can even hoop with it as it is! She's using it in a parade this weekend.

nice!
