I am a super nerd and my other nerdy friends just found out that I have taken up hooping and immediately thrust costumes at me for characters that use hoops. I think it would be awesome to take a costume to another level by being able to actually show some proficiency in the skills the character is supposed to posses. The only problem is the hoops are always custom and not really conducive to being constructed in a hooper friendly fashion...ie light weight, can take a beating and not pointy.

I have seen lots of non function versions of the hoop as well as the costume but with a standard hoop. I think there must be some kind of happy medium here.

Does anyone have suggestions for how they would go about constructing something like this from a base hoop? Has anyone seen usually designed hoops being used?

Oh, what a fun challenge.

If I were doing it, I'd build a custom hoop with a shiny lame (or sequined) fabric sleeve slipped over the pipe before it was connected. The sleeve would be sewn so that it fit tightly around the pipe. The points/flanges would be shaped from the fabric and boned like in a corset so that they held their shape more or less correctly when moving. It might be a bit floppy when still (in other words, the pose shown is going to be hard to replicate without doing the hoop in metal), so be prepared to isolate for photos. :-)

You could also line the inside of the hoop with some sort of foam material, kinda like what they use to stick fake flowers in but I think you probably find some that's softer and easier to work with. Look around places like michael's

We are thinking of using the thick puzzle block fun foam but I am hoping there are other people who have attempted something like this before. Kind of curious if the additional pieces will have a known affect on the usability of the hoop.

I think the stuff you put flowers in is very brittle so drop it once and say bye bye to the nice tips.

maybe you could use wire hanger to form the shape of the blades and then stretch some grey stockings over it, kinda like the construction of fairy wings:

then just attach it to your hoop

or cardboard might work...though i think it would make your hoop quite heavy.

I really like this idea and sounds very do-able

great idea! i loved the soul calibur games :)

Hmm, I'm thinking that a thin rigid plastic could be cut into shape and attached.  Like this:

His outfit is mostly thin leather and pleather with dagger folded pieces riveted back down in folded shape.  The stiffness provides the feathering shape.  the exact same setup could make a giant sawblade.  then, cover the entire thing in chrome paint or foil tape.

(PS foam liner is a great idea.  I use 1/2" wide 1/8 " thick adhesive insulation.  But you have to tape over it to keep it on for hooping.)

Tira FTW! Thats awesome. I've always loved cosplay but never got into it myself.

I know the band gwar uses foam latex, styrofoam, and hardened rubber to make their costumes and I feel like you could do that to make your hoop. I really dont know how functional you're going to be able to make it but it'll sure look badass.

I like this hoop too:

btw if you google image tira cosplay there are tons of pictures you might get some ideas/inspiration there

Yeah, there are a lot of cosplay but I haven't seen any hoops that appear functional. Most of them are made from very heavy materials and dense resins.

I hadn't seen that version of the hoop. I really like it.
