I know that there are a lot of folks on this forum who have been to Burning Man and I'm looking for some advice about dealing with long, thick hair on the Playa. Lately I've really enjoyed hooping with my hair down but it gets pretty tangled when I do. I'm really hoping to not come back from my first Burning Man with one big messy dreadlock. I always joke that my hair is self-dreading. It just WANTS to be dreadlocked, but I'm not going there for now.) I never brush my hair, just run my fingers through to undo the tangles and of course I use a ton of conditioner. Short of wearing a lunch-lady hair net or shower cap the whole time, any ideas about surviving with a full head of hair? Thanks in advance!

I have medium length hair and the first time I went to Burning Man I got my hair braided in tons of tiny braids. It was nice and out of the way. Although with lots of thick hair it might be difficult and to expensive. I really recomend just putting your hair up in a way. 2 buns? 1 pony tail with fun stuff hanging down, feathers, beads, yarn? If you say your hair is self dreading well I garuntee that playa wind and dust will do its best to make it happen faster! Not to mention twirling in the hoop while the wind is blowing! Youll have a new hairstyle in no time! lol

Have a great time at the Burn, its life changing!

xoxo
Will you be there this year? I'd love to hoop with you.
Id love to say yes I am, but my life changes every day, every second! I really have no idea if it will be in my cards to go. I know that its more likley that 3 days before the event Ill end up saying Ill go! My life is just random like that lol. But it would be a dream/experience to hoop with you! Many people dont know this but when I went to BM I was 16 and thats where I got my first hoop. Long story short a friend of mine rode around for days with a hoop for me on his back until he found me in a crowed of thousands of people and handed me my hoop... magikal! So BM is truly holy land for me and Im so excited for you to be able to experience it too!
What a great story. I'm always fascinated about how people find their way to the hoop. Or in your case, how the hoop found it's way to you. I can imagine and resonate with your gypsy lifestyle and I'll just trust that when the time is right, we'll find ourselves somewhere, hoops in hand, meeting each other for the first time. Thanks for the encouragement regarding Burning Man. I'm crossing my fingers that when late August rolls around, you find yourself packing up for the journey home to the Playa.
I'll be there and I would love to hoop with you!
Cool! I'd love that, Paige. Do you know where you'll be? Which camp?
Kentucky Fried Camp! I'll tell you the location in a couple weeks (as soon as it's approved!)
I'll be at Spin Cycle. Looking forward to it! (I'll be the crazy hooper with the giant head of knotty hair!)
I have long thick hair and last year I kept my hair in a low bun or ponytail and covered my head with a scarf. That way I could still wear a hat. And when a dust storm came through, or if i was riding my bike I would use the ends of the scarf to wrap around my nose and face. It kept me pretty well protected. Even still I did come home with a couple of dreadlocks. But I dont comb my hair either. I hope i see you at BM this year Beth.

here you can kind of see what i mean. A long scarf can be very versatile. I brought 4 on this trip and they were always in use.
I have very thick hair halfway down my back and for the last 2 years I have had my bff (Thanks Amanda!) braid yarn into my hair in about 40-50 small braids. It looks great, keeps you from having to brush your hair & worry about it. Can be somewhat time consuming to get out if your hair gets really crazy, but for the most part mine seemed to slide out fairly easy (about 70% of them)
No brushing, lots of conditioner? Someone's got curly/wavy hair! :)

When I want to keep my hair out of the way and keep it from getting tangled, I opt for two large braids. My hair is super curly, like Shirley Temple curly, so when I wear lots of little braids, I get a frizz halo after the second day. Large braids are easier to undo and redo, if needed. And if hair doesn't want to go back up, a tiny amount of water and conditioner -- you don't even have to rinse it out -- goes a long way.

So does a hair pick. It doesn't break curly/wavy hair the way a brush does, but it's great for wrangling ornery hair.
