I know that there are a lot of folks on this forum who have been to Burning Man and I'm looking for some advice about dealing with long, thick hair on the Playa. Lately I've really enjoyed hooping with my hair down but it gets pretty tangled when I do. I'm really hoping to not come back from my first Burning Man with one big messy dreadlock. I always joke that my hair is self-dreading. It just WANTS to be dreadlocked, but I'm not going there for now.) I never brush my hair, just run my fingers through to undo the tangles and of course I use a ton of conditioner. Short of wearing a lunch-lady hair net or shower cap the whole time, any ideas about surviving with a full head of hair? Thanks in advance!

If you leave it down, you might try brushing it. Or if you have a serious objection to that, maybe doing that fingers through the hair trick several times a day. When I had my hair long, I brushed it daily. I usually used both hands, to keep from pulling it out at the roots. Even so, my brush would be matted with hair and I had to clean it every day or 2. One time I hurt one of my arms, and didn't brush my hair for 2 or 3 days, and it was starting to dread up in that brief period. And that was here in central NC. I can imagine what my hair would have been like after 2 weeks in the desert without brushing it.
Vaughn (and everybody), I appreciate the advice. Think I'm going to try pretty much everything suggested. One or two braids, dry shampoo, funky hair wraps. Vaughn, I will say that I have might have serious objection to hair brushing in the same way that you have serious objection to wearing shoes : ) For those of you who don't know, Vaughn is our Barefoot Hooper and I've seen him in shoes a handful of times. When I brush my hair out, it tends to get super bushy and big, so I'll probably avoid that. I'll have to post before and after pictures of my Burning Man hair adventure. Thanks to all!
