Hello!!

I was wondering if anyone has any sort of tutorial or suggestions on making those ever popular flow pants. I can't find anything on YouTube or google really.. but I got this beautiful fabric I really want to make in to flowy pants. I don't have a serger, just a regular old sewing machine but I figure they can't be THAT hard to make, right? I just really need a good visual and I can go from there, not too much into using patterns/pdfs. I was thinking maybe just an elastic waistband would work? I just need some help!

Thanks for your help!

Depending on how stretchy your fabric is, you can make them without elastic by creating a wide (foldable, even) waistband. Strong 4-way stretch works well for this. Wide elastic works, too.

For the legs, find some pants you own that fit you closely in the thighs and use those as a guide for sizing. You want your flow pants to fit snuggly in the thighs and hips, and to flare out at the bottom

The simplest way to make the flares is to incorporate the angle into the bottom of the pant leg. Measure your legs so you know where your knee is, and then draw/cut at an angle from knee point to the bottom of the pant. An alternate way is to create a separate circle piece and sew that to the leg.

With a conventional machine, be sure to sew using a narrow zigzag stich, so there is some give in your seams. Otherwise you will end up with popped seams.

Have fun with your pants-making.

Thanks so much!!

If you're into making your own clothes you should check out http://www.stitchrippers.com/

Its actually another website created by Safire. You might find more help there.

In the past, I have taken a pair of yoga pants or other excersize pants that I no longer wear and cut them apart at the seams. You can trace the pattern onto a large piece of paper. You can alter the pattern from there. Make sure to add at least a half inch to all sides for seam allowance. It is always easier to take away fabric than it is to add on...Good luck! Would love to see what you come up with!
