I've been hooping for about 4 months and I've made my hoops with PEX tubing from homedepot.
I love them but I want a lighter hoop. I do not like Polypro, I've used it and I can say it's too light for my tastes. So naturally I'm wanting an HDPE hoop, the problem is I don't really know how big to get the tubing?
3/4in and 1/2in is what I was thinking about buying but I'm wondering what is the fastest and lightest tubing size for HDPE?
Any help I could get would be awesome! Thanks guys. :)

Permalink Reply by ash!ey on June 25, 2012 at 9:39pm i purchased hdpe tubing from mcmastercarr and was not a huge fan, it could be my preference, but one of my favorite practice hoop was from a store bought sports autority (that you can get at wal mart) pinched a hole with an exacto to drain the water, and taped it. Sadly that hoop was stolen at a festival.

Permalink Reply by LiviJoyHoops on June 26, 2012 at 5:24pm So I am really antsy to try a material other than my black pe tubing (both 3/4" 160 and 100psi, and 1/2" 125 psi). Where I live, no one sells HDPE or Polypro for me to buy local so whatever--I have to order online. :(... Anyway, we sell the Wham-o brand hula hoops at my work, and oddly enough, I've never attempted to hoop with them. I just found out from Answers.com that they make their hoops from HDPE. The beads are a bit annoying, but it might be worth getting one! I don't know how accurate that info is...so if anyone knows please post!
By the way, if you haven't tried the good ol' black pe irrigation tubing, you might give it a shot! Your post tells me that even though this whole time I have been really wanting to try Polypro, I might find that I should be happy with what I've been using!
Then again, there is still so much I don't know... :) Live and learn!

One thing to keep in mind when buying hdpe or polypro is that those tubing types have a 1/2in. size difference than pvc or . For example, A 3/4OD pvc or pex tubing would be larger than a 3/4OD hdpe or polypro tubing. So 3/4OD pvc or pex tubing is about the same as a 7/8OD hdpe or polypro tubing. A 3/4OD hdpe or polypro is about the same size as a 1/2in pvc or pex tubing. Also polypro and hdpe weigh pretty much the same, granted hdpe is about 4-5 grams heavier than polypro but that is not a huge difference at all.
Tubing Termology:(you may see ordering hula hoops online)
*OD=Outside Diameter
*ID=Inside Diameter
*psi=pounds per square inch
It's best to measure the thickness of your current hoop to know the right size you need. The 3/4 OD is a nice size to start with, it's faster and lighter than the pex tubing but not too light and fast as the 5/8OD tubing.
