The Alchemist comes to mind, it's not a self-help but it's quite inspiring. It's a fiction that's easy to fall into. Also, Ishmeal, and The 5 people you Meet in Heaven are both great.
I wish I knew of some non-fiction ones.

I second Ishmael... It's my favorite book!

I was gifted a book last year called "Pronoia the Antidote to Paranoia" by Rob Breszny from a very special lady. I was at the peak of my life when I received it, but has been VERY helpful through the tough times I've been through since then. The book is large and almost more like a text book, however, you don't need to read page by page to become inspired. The very first page inspired me. You can sift through the index to find beneficial texts and meditations, or simply open up to one random page a day. Every page has something beautiful and positive. It's a must have, I will gift one to you if need be!
I ALSO will recommend the Alchemist. The Four Agreements is almost fantastic and a short read. Take some yoga classes. If you already do that, "Yoga for the Hands" is a great book to work on mudras which are very beneficial to both mental and physical health. Hang in there! <3
Permalink Reply by ash!ey on January 17, 2012 at 12:48pm I also forgot: I actually just went through a tramatic situation where I lost my best friend and moved to an area where I don't know anyone, and I read this quote:
“we are surrounded by expectations that may have little to do with who we really are, expectations held by people who are not trying to discern our selfhood but to fit us into slots. In families, schools, workplaces, and religious communities, we are trained away from true self toward images of acceptability…our original shape is deformed beyond recognition; and we ourselves, driven by fear, too often betray true self to gain the approval of others.” by Justine Musk
I've been following her blog, and her writing is wonderful and has been a very big help to me in my given situation, so if you cant get your hands on a book right away, i definitely suggest you start with this blog.

'The Law of Attraction' by Jerry and Esther Hicks. It's changed my entire life! You can get a used copy on amazon for like $8

The Happiness Project is interesting; the author decided to try out different things to improve her happiness. Some worked, others didn't and she writes in a friendly style about her experiences. http://www.happiness-project.com/
The Power of Now fell into my hands when I was ready for it, but it's not an easy read. I spent most of the book calling bullshit on the author, Eckhart Tolle, but there were enough real truths in it that it influenced my life in fundamental ways and made me a lot easier to live with. I am tons happier on a daily basis thanks to the Power of Now. http://www.eckharttolle.com/books/now/
Parent Effectiveness Training is another book with profound - and very practical - influence in my life. It's written to help parents surprising and shocking information about the ways we communicate badly, and advice and ideas about how to change. I am definitely happier now that I understand some of the things that were causing communication drama in my life. http://www.gordontraining.com/parent-programs/parent-effectiveness-...

He was involved in a number of experiments searching for the relationship between meditation and neurochemistry. He wrote a book called "Happiness" and it's superb.
