So through my travels I've met a lot of amazing hoop dancers. But one thing that has happened to me numerous times is that during street performing or after a performance someone will come up to me and say "I'm a hooper too" and I say "Omg! That's awesome! . . What's your hoopcity name? Whos your favorite hooper? Do you have a YouTube?  Do u go to gatherings or festivals? ect."
Them they lol at me like they have no clue what I'm saying and then say "Oh, I just bought a hoop" or "I just took a class"
Anyway it's kinda funny that there are tons of people who own hoops but don't want to, care to, or know how to be apart of the communtity. I have to step back and remember that not everyone who owns a hoop saw the video if the day or even know what that is lol
Does that ever happen to you? Meet someone who says there a hooper but doesn't know who shanti or spiral is? Maybe it's cuz I'm so use to meeting community hoopers that when I meet just a fitness hooper I'm taken back lol

Yes, totally this happens to me! I once met a hooper and was like "Do you go to jams, we totally have to meet up!" She looked and me and said " A what? What do you mean, "a jam?"'~~I've also met a few other people who look at me funny when I say SaFire/Spiral etc....I think some people are doing it for fun and enjoyment and some people really feel the community connection for learning and growth. It's all good!
I've never personally met any other hoopers! LOL! If I ever do, I'll make sure to inquire if they're part of the community, and if not, I'll ask them why. I can't imagine not having the energy, love, support, etc. that the hooping community provides, and I only participate via the internet! However, I guess some people just prefer to do their own thing, and I guess that's cool.
Oh Shelly!! You have to come to the Hoop Twin CIties Hoopla next week then!!
What? When? Where? I think next weekend we're tied up. Dang!! I really need to keep myself advised on your events there so I can attend.
I will leave you a comment with the deets!!
I've had this happen to me many times some people who I ask have never even heard of hoopcity lol
Yes, this happens all the time. People see me with a hoop and Say "oh, I like to Hula Hoop, and I am really good at it." Then I realize she said, "hula hoop" She is not a HoopDancer and I don't even get excited. I just smile and say where do you Hula Hoop??? and they, usually laugh and say "the yard". Or ohhh !!!! when I was a kid... not anymore. Then I feel sad for them... If I feel up to it, I sometimes encourage them to hoop with me and try to explain what HoopDance has done for me.
That is really funny. I think too it might depend on how internet-savvy some people are. Some people don't care to sit in front of the computer and watch videos or chat on message boards. I like being on the computer and building online relationships and connections. I already am on a couple message boards that are like home to me, so when I found hoopcity, it was easy to jump right in. It's weird to me to think someone would hoop and NOT be on hoop city, but for some people, keeping up with things through the web just isn't their interest.
i have a vague idea who spiral is and think ive heard of shanti. this probably sounds odd, but some hoopers just hoop and get fulfillment out of it in different ways. i make tutorials but never watch others, (however i will always make exceptions for sharna rose) this way i feel like i'm not copying what someone else is saying and makes what i do say or the way i try to explain something feel more authentic to myself. its not that i never watch videos but I never rarely consider myself "in the loop". for me the most frustrating part is having students who are really enthusiastic during the 8 weeks of class and then i see them 6 months later and they haven't touched their hoop. what happened to their passion? but then you have the 1 in 50 students that goes on to teach, or write an ebook, or who is totally hoop obsessed and it makes it all worth while. did this have any thing to do with this discussion? I have know idea. but it's what i thought of after reading it.
I think it depends on how you got introduced to a hoop. I found the hoop when I saw a hoopnotica dvd while searching for ab workouts. I joined the forum (that used to exist) on their website and when members started posting progress videos on youtube, that's when I discovered that there were lots of hoopers on youtube and then eventually found about about hoopcity. Even on hoopnotica's forum occasionally a well known hooper got mentioned and I wouldn't know who it was. I don't go to festivals but it seems that quite a lot of hoopers do and had that been where I first found out about hooping, then perhaps I would've been more aware of the hoop community. I do not spend lots of time on Youtube or forums, well it kinda comes and goes, sometimes I'll get excited and read/watch a lot and others not so much. When I started, I never would've thought there was a hoop community.
I get that with everything. Art, hooping, reading... some people like talking about it with others and some people don't really care. I'm all about the community though and love online interaction- I know it's helped my hooping develop! Personally I'd hate to learn a new skill without some sort of community support. It's been encouraging to read about other's troubles and triumphs and the inspiration never stops! But to each her own, someone who owns a hoop they never use could just have other interests.
this is a good topic to discuss. I teach a hoop fitness class but am a hoop dancer. I like to inform people that there is a whole community about hula hooping beyond what they are aware of. I have run into people who have come up to me at events where I have performed etc that hula hoop but don't hoop dance and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. They too are hoopers but may not be in the same 'circle' we are..festivals..music..way of life etc.. and that's fine. I think it's great to expand their horizons though and introduce them to something completely different than what they are used to. :)
Hula hooping is positive outlet for us just as it is for them... better fitness, etc it's our job to point them in a different direction and what they do with that information is entirely up to them. :)
