So through my travels I've met a lot of amazing hoop dancers. But one thing that has happened to me numerous times is that during street performing or after a performance someone will come up to me and say "I'm a hooper too" and I say "Omg! That's awesome! . . What's your hoopcity name? Whos your favorite hooper? Do you have a YouTube?  Do u go to gatherings or festivals? ect."
Them they lol at me like they have no clue what I'm saying and then say "Oh, I just bought a hoop" or "I just took a class"
Anyway it's kinda funny that there are tons of people who own hoops but don't want to, care to, or know how to be apart of the communtity. I have to step back and remember that not everyone who owns a hoop saw the video if the day or even know what that is lol
Does that ever happen to you? Meet someone who says there a hooper but doesn't know who shanti or spiral is? Maybe it's cuz I'm so use to meeting community hoopers that when I meet just a fitness hooper I'm taken back lol

I have never met someone who just hoops for fitness, only people that look at fitness as a positive aspect of hooping. I learned about this community through my hoop jam group, but I was never really that active in it until pretty recently. Before this site I never really participated in an online community, but this one is so accepting and loving that I feel that I am able to participate - I'm naturally shy and don't even participate in class. I never used to post videos or anything, but I always watched other peoples videos mostly to admire their flow because that's why I really appreciate about hooping. It makes everyone so unique and you can totally see that and appreciate it through their hooping. I just think it's a beautiful thing, and I think anyone that appreciates it enough to pick up a hoop and work with it to learn understands that the process is awesome and fun and makes you feel so good and that's why they do it. I believe we all have one core reason for hooping, maybe other people who hoop have different reasons but I think that if I was hooping for fitness I would also be hooping for fitness AND because it's fun and makes me feel good. Whatever kind of hooper you are, you can appreciate the hoop! =]
Not an issue yet - Hoop City is how I met the hoopers I spin with now, and I recruited the few newbies I know through the monthly jam I started back in June. And of course I told the newbies about Hoop City, even though they haven't officially joined yet. But we all know it's only a matter of time... ;)

There are a few people I've introduced to hoop dance who haven't really taken to it, but they don't call themselves hoopers, so that doesn't count.
i hooped for about a year before hearing about hoopcity, i hooped with music and did tricks but hoopcity really showed me that there are more possibilities and helped me develop a more "hoopdance" style
This is a great topic and I never put thought of it as Hoop Community vs Hoop Fitness and that is totally what it is.

I fell in love with hoopDANCE, and then was approached by the local YWCA to teach hoop classes.
(I am the first Hooping teacher in Winston-Salem, not counting kids learning at Summer Camp). ^_^

I absorbed hooping through YouTube. I watched Christabel and Spiral in awe.
I found teachers in Carrboro and Asheville and learned from them.
Then I went to teach and my class was billed as "Hoop Aerobics". After all, I WAS at a fitness center!
I don't know the number of students I have taught there, but what I do know is that the number who became interested in actually Hoop DANCE, I can count on one hand.
It has been a bit disappointing for me, and I am tired of "sanitizing" hooping for the sake of the mainstream.

To answer your question, YES, and the craziest thing was meeting a hooper who lives maybe 45 miles from me at a festival where she was selling hoops. She had made like NINETY of them, and her booth looked GREAT, but after talking with her a bit I realized that she is totally only interested in the aerobics and only knows waist-hooping for exercise. Nothing wrong with that... I spend a lot of time hooping on my waist too... but to have created 90 hoops to sell it was hard for me to grasp that her knowledge is so limited. No twins, no isolations...
I think the only name she recognized was Shakti Sunfire.
Ya, that is pretty shocking... selling that many hoops and only waist hooping. Even the fitness hooping I have seen on youtube utilizes all the parts of your body!
Lol that has happened to me quite a few times as well. Every hooper I've met, mind you, not a lot of them, has no idea what HoopCity was. I informed them of it, of course, but they didn't really seem to care much about the community. I don't push though--I'm not much of a people person, so usually I don't care to find the community, but with hooping I felt that need to. I do love getting my friends into hoopcity and then bonding over videos and stuff xD
