So I was out practicing today (it is 52 today yea!) and as I was taking my hoop from my waist up over my head and back down I banged my ear real bad.. Ugh its all red now! It hurts but oh well. I was wondering anyone has gotten any injuries while hooping besides the initial bruises.....

So far Ive just had the initial bruising but my poor kitty got clocked by my hoop when i was hand hooping and it flew on the poor lil guy
Oh yea I looooove this nice February weather! it is divine. but yea i hit my ears all the time exactly like that and it's wayy painful. Recently I tried to do some trick (don't remember what maybe that has something to do with my injury haha) and i smacked myself in the forehead with it and i ripped part of my grip tape gashed me. so now i'm walking around with this big cut on my head haha. i guess it all comes with the territory. as long as i don't break any bones!
I've clocked myself in the eye socket, bruising the bridge of my nose and giving myself a black eye. Learning the ankle pick-up has shredded the back of my ankle. Sometimes when neck hooping it pops up to high and smacks my jaw. All in a days work and SO worth the injuries as I forget the pain moments later anyways. =)
I pulled my neck out really badly trying to do the one shoulder duck out. Oooh man that burned badly, I thought I might need physio!! The knee hooping ruined my legs for my Saturday night out, thick black hosiery at the ready lol! I have also bashed ears, and had my hair tangled round the hoop!!!! (Neck hooping with hair down, not advisable hehehee) It's not so much me I worry about though, but the kids do insist on getting in the way! Jake is learning to duck at the right times though.
I smacked myself in the ear this week, too. Left a nice red mark that faded after a day or so. It's not the first time I've done that and I wondered if I would eventually develop "cauliflower ear" like boxers get.

I think I am hoop accident prone. I frequently get little scrapes from ripped metallic tape; I cut up my bare feet on concrete and pebbles; I jammed a finger when I missed a grip; I completely toppled over onto stones the first time I tried a fire hoop in October (but did not catch myself on fire). I also gave myself a nice whack on the nose the day before my sister's wedding. Regular old bruises just don't count anymore.
It's not really an injury, but I notice that after doing a lot of chest hooping with a heavy hoop my shoulders get very tight and sore and it causes me migraines. I now have a new hoop and try to stretch more before and after I'm hooping.
I've found that nipple piercings must be protected by band-aids to prevent them from getting bashed into repeatedly while flailing around learning chest hooping. Other than that, most of my injuries are smacks and bruises.
Hmm you posted this awhile ago.. how is it going now.. the nipple piercings & chest hooping? I've been thinking about getting mine pierced but have held off just for this one reason.
I continue to bust my nose with the hoop while chest hooping. It happens when I don't count my timing while bringing my arms in & out of the hoop and then BAM! I also hit the underside of my jaw while chest hooping on the earth angle; I did it so hard I bit the sides of my tongue and clacked my teeth together really hard.

I'm still trying to figure out the best hairstyle for neck/chest hooping and lifts. My thick hair comes down to the middle of my back and when I put it in a bun, hoop catches it and bounces back on my body in a way that hurts. So far, pippi longstocking braids are the best....
its great to hear other people's hoop injuries (just because then I don't feel like such an ass when it happens to me now) So far no major injuries for me, my ear is fine from yesterday, thankfully. Now the thing that I have noticed lately is that after I am done hooping my tailbone has started hurting. I am really trying to teach myself to do new tricks and get my hoop to go down and then back up so I am sure that is what its from.
Liz -I can understand about people being getting in the way, my son used to but now he gets on the floor and crawls underneath me when he has to go by. Everyone else stands there for a minute and watches the hoop and then tries to jump past, its so funny although at the time that it happens they usually bump into me and that pisses me off.
I figured out that, while chest hooping, if you lead the "pulling your arm up" maneuver with your elbow (instead of your fist) the facial injuries decrease significantly.
:)
Awesome tip, thank you. I'll try that immediately.
