Hello Hoopers!

I have decided to start making my own hoops and am a bit confused about taping.

My confusion is about grippy tape - such as gaffer. All of my hoops have used gaffer with the exception of my sanded polypro. I had read that electrical/vinyl tape is an alternative to gaffer.

However, I just taped a hoop using vinyl and it, in my opinion, does not offer any grip.

I had also heard hockey tape is a good alternative. I ordered some of this because I thought it would work well on solid metallic hoops such as these, http://store.hooptechnique.com/products, from Spiral and Rich. It just arrived and it is anything but grippy.

Am I getting this wrong? Is vinyl and hockey tape used for decorative/protective reasons only or does it serve a purpose as a grip tape?

*Any advice on taping a metallic hoop would be MUCH appreciated!

Would also LOVE some more video tutorials on taping so if you know of any, or feel like making one, doooo share!

vinyl and hockey tape are for decorative/protective reasons only.  Unless you get cloth hockey tape - that is comparable to gaff.
Thanks for posting that because I think hockey tape is very grippy, even more grippier than my gaffer hoops!  But maybe I've been using the cloth hockey tape.  Maybe in Canada that's all you can get because we are hockey nuts up here!
I have used tennis tape, but be careful!  Until you use it a bit it can mark up floors, walls, other hoops...
I have used electrical and even duck tape but def not good for grip. I thought the cloth hockey tape worked really well for grip, but I don't care for the width of the hockey tape or the duck tape. Ordering tape on line is really the only solution I have found and it can be expensive after shiping. ordering in bulk makes it alot cheaper but if you arn't selling a ton of hoops it really isnt practical.

No, I have hockey tape and it's really grippy to the point of almost being sticky. I also have this sort of medical tape, not sure what it's called, but it's thinner than the hockey tape and just as grippy. It's the kind you use to tape up your ankles and wrists and whatnot for support. I found both tapes at a sports store, they came in a rainbow of colors. I also wasn't sure if I should go with the hockey tape or the medical tape so I got both, and they both work equally well.

I've also noticed it's a lot easier to wrap a hoop with cloth tape, since it doesn't get wrinkles in it and comes unstuck from itself  easily if you get it all tangled up.

That's the downside of hockey tape.  Though you can get it in a variety of colours and patterns where I live, it does wear somewhat quickly and become gummy (compared to gaffer).  But it can last for a while.  I find it looks dingy fast.

There are two kinds of hockey tape - shin guard tape, which is vinyl, and hockey stick tape, which is cloth.  You want the lattter.  I love, love, love stick tape for grip!  I find it far grippier than gaff, although I agree with Lulu that it does look dingy fast - lighter colors especially.  Also the edges tend to roll up, so it has to be adhered with another tape - I ususally use gaff spike tape for a super grippy hoop =)

Hi!

I am a huge fan of the grip/gaf tape- love the durability and the friction it creates, especially for new hoopers.

With reference to helpful hints for the metallic/deco tape- we suggest that you use the prism, sequin and/or mirror first until you get comfortable with taping.  These tapes have do not have as sticky of a back to them and can be removed if you start and find that you are taping too wide or too narrow.  If you use the glitter tape and pull it off to re-start it will leave a super sticky glitter residue.

If you like the look of the full metallic hoop, but not the slick feeling, you can line the inside of it with a 1/2" strip of grip as seen on our hoop here: www.hoopsupplies.com/blog (the monster hoop entry)

We offer small rolls of deco tapes in case you just want to try to make one hoop with it and not invest a whole bunch in the beginning.  www.hoopsupplies.com

Hope this helps!

Sunny

I use cloth hockey tape and it is far better than gaff in my opinion...the only thing is that the tape Is hard to clean so if you hoop outside or are rough on your hoops it will get dirty very quickly. i purchase my cloth hockey tape at canadian tire (they have awesome colours like lime green and purple) or Walmart (sold only during the winter months) Sometimes i find the hockey tape grip so well it actually scratches my skin :S haha
