Haha!! This is perhaps the wittiest, most insightful condemnation of the "free publicity" scam perpetrated on artists since the beginning of time. Harlan may sound mean but he's dead on. Think about this every time you get asked to perform for free or for peanuts.

Love it! thanks for sharing!!

I agree, people in the arts are often expected to do things for free because a) arts are undervalued in our society and b) they think, well, they (the artists) just love what they do anyway...

I perform for free but it depends on for what.  If I made hooping my sole business and really put my heart and soul into making it a professional endeavor, then yes, I would be very very selective on what I do for free.  But, I don't.  I put a lot of heart and time into a show, but it's not my life's bread and butter.

Also, I feel I have been offered a lot as a hoop learner for free, from those free youtube tutes!  and I want to share that spirit with others when I can.  I've also paid for classes, etc, to help balance this in some way.

And its a conundrum: I expect people to pay me but they don't know who I am, yet, to get myself known, I might have to do things for free...

I am not a professional.  Yet, I do get angry and feel used sometimes, for sharing someting I love doing.
