I recently booked a gig at a local "upscale" mall. We've done events there for the past two years. This time its a different organizer. She said that the mall asked us not to wear tie dye like some of us have at their previous events. This is not a problem, I just now feel like "Well, tie dye was colorful and fun for the kids, which was our purpose. Are we supposed to "get preppy" (and that WOULD be a problem, I don't have a lot of "nice" clothes)." The event is for raising Autism awareness. The previous events were for similar things, cancer walks, etc. I also wish that we would've been told the first time that they wanted a more upscale image, I feel a little retroactively embarassed at having gone a bit hoopy for it. But they have clowns and all sorts of characters there, I never once thought "hey, we look a little shabby." What would you guys wear?

Not to be rude but that is not what you wear to an upscale event. If your not being paid I understand not going all out but I'd still avoid wearing that.

I think some belly dancer scarves over some leggings with cute tops would be very appropriate and upscale-ish, plus adorable!

I am sure you'll look fine. It sounds like she just doesn't want it to look too "loud".

PS. what a fun opportunity!!! Have a great time!

Thanks guys! I thought just jeans and a tee would be "boring" but if you guys don't think so, I may just go with that. I'm volunteering at a local free festival later that day, so its good to have something that can morph. I loooove the belly dance skirt idea, I'm just not sure they would want anything closely resembling anything hinting at "risque" they're pretty tight. I thought about going in formal wear for fun lol but then I realized it will be a looong day.

instead of jeans could you wear black leggings and a tee shirt dress or maybe yoga pants?

I think jeans with a "nice" tee would be great :) your right you don't want to be boring, something with some waist shaping and maybe some beading or embroidery

oooOOOooo I'm sure I can find something beady or embroidered, or both! What do you guys think about guys clothing for this? Its mainly for my hooping partner, he was the only one that wore tie dye. Well I guess mine was tie dyed too, but it was blue that matched my jeans, with a big embroidered/beaded butterfly on the front, the bottom was flared. When it was cool, I had a matching hooded but fitted long sleave shirt on. I thought it looked quite nice. He either has very colorful tiedye with matching bottoms, often wearing a tiedye union suit with shorts over top, or he has a lot of very drab clothing for work. I don't know how to dress a dude colorfully without using tie dye lol!

jeans sound awful to hoop in! LOL depends on what you're doing i suppose. Jeans make me feel stifffff and restricting. Try youtube-ing men who are well-known hoopers/poi spinners/ etc. and observe what they're wearing. then from there you can kinda match him with a "feminine" touch? thrift stores and vintage shops are a good place to start looking and sometimes ONE peice of clothing can make things you already have fabulous. yoga clothing is the most cozy too hoop in in my opinion....uggh jeans...*cringe* hahaha

I love hooping in jeans <3 Don't get me wrong, I love yoga pants even more, but jeans, if they're stretchy just fit and move with me. I prefer them to bare legs even. Thanks for the suggestion of checking out other spin-dudes. Didn't even think of that. He's such a hippie lol!!! He does love contact juggling, but he's very self conscious when "costuming" he always thinks he looks silly (even though EVERYONE loves him and thinks he's fabulous) Oh we'll find something. You guys are inspiring '>:)

I think having something to look at for inspiration is the best. I believe Safire is a prime example of business performance dress or classy costumes. Yes avoid tye dye,leg warmers, t-shirts, jeans, neon colors, and coin belts (unless coin belts are fitting the theme of event.) Items you would wear to a festival or rave basically.Think of what you could wear to a dinner party but circus themed.

Ahhhh, formal circus attire, how I love thee.

Well, to clarify, it is NOT an upscale event. It is a "Family Fun Day" following a 5k walk. People are in shorts, teeshirts, running gear, sweaty, etc. The event did not make this request. The venue, the mall, made this request (or so we were told by the event coordinator). She said that if we "forgot" by the event, she wouldn't care. I told her that we would respect the wishes of the venue. But its a MALL LOL!!! They have a Nordstroms so they think they are the hottest thing to hit town. Truth be told, its just the rich section of the city, the mall the rich people go to, etc. But they're the ones donating to the cause, I'll wear whatever I'm asked to wear. I just wasn't asked to wear anything specific, just asked NOT to wear tie dye..... Photos of Adam from the 2011 and 2012 events that apparently prompted this request:

As you can see, its not a "dinner party" type of thing, or even a business thing, though I love those ideas and inspirations when that sort of thing may come up. Its just an odd request I'm trying to adapt to, while staying colorful and fun for the kids that the event is being held for.
