I've noticed recently that there are two things that will always elicit a negative reaction and sometimes a snarky comment from me on hooping forums.

1. Videos of elephants hooping. This is cruel. It's cute, yes, but animals are tortured to break them into submission for training. This is true for all animal acts, really, but I particularly love elephants.

2. Hoop size correlated to hoop skill. The myth is that beginners use big hoops and advanced hoopers use tiny polypro hoops? No, actually, not. Hoop size preferences are a function of style, not skill.

Aside from these two things, I am generally mellow, positive, and accepting of all hooping topics and ideas.

I'll bet I'm not alone in having triggers that are hard to keep in check. What are your hooping pet peeves and how do you keep them under control?

this isn't really a pet peeve about others hooping, it's more a pet peeve of other's judging. i hate that people assume that just because i hoop, or because i have led hoops, that i do all sorts of drugs! i'm a sober hooper (for the most part. i'll have -a- drink once in a while, but i don't really count that), and it drives me nuts when people assume i'm tripping out when i play with my leds!

i'm totally with you on the videos of animals hooping. elephants are one of my favorite animals, too!

I totally agree with you, I have both regular hoops and LED... I hate the sterotype that comes with it. I to am a sober hooper and enjoy a couple of drinks. But I dont like to hoop when I have been drinking.

Definitely also with you on the elephant hooping thing.

The size thing makes me nuts. I'm constantly reminding my students that size of the hoop does not determine skill level. Another thing that drives me nuts are the people who think unless you go to every retreat and meet every "famous" hooper, you aren't really part of the "scene". For me, the hoopers I want to meet most are the brand new ones, the ones who got the courage to come to a class learn something new and different.

Wouldn't that be the hooper fan club scene rather than the hooping scene?

lol precisely!

Hooping pet peeves.....
I hate the whole "I think I'm a better hooper then so and so" or "I AM SO AWESOME"
it bums me out. And who cares if you are better than another person? And yes, you are awesome. Do you really need to tell EVERYONE that?? Keep it to yourself, THANKS. lol that's pretty much it.

wow.. to actually go around saying they think they are great? That would be annoying indeed.
Everyone started somewhere and people have their own styles too. People can have a preference, but that don't give reason to announce how awesome they think they are. Doesn't matter how "great" I ever get, the most I'd say is something like "I'm pleased with how much I've learned/grown"

I totally agree with this one.

I hate that people who have no idea about the hoop culture think its stupid. like, "oh wow....you play with a little kids toy. doesn't that get boring after 5 minutes?" ummm nooooo, it doesn't.

When I'm walking at night with a hoop I try to be invisible. I don't always want drunken people to demand that they want to hoop :D sometimes it's ok though.

Sometimes it is hard to find a place where I can hoop without drawing much attention. Of course it is nice that people like to watch me dance but sometimes I would like to hoop and be sure that nobody is watching.

OMG!  I get that all the time!   "Do a show for us, oh common, please!"
