So I tend to have some pretty long nails, mainly because they just grow really fast and it's hard to keep up with them.  Yesterday I paid for that dearly, when I did a behind the back pass, missed it, and cracked my hoop into my thumbnail, which broke down past the cuticle (ooooow!).  I trimmed it, bandaged it, and finished up my hooping session due some dogged dedication, but it made me curious...does anyone hoop with long nails or find it a problem?  This is the first time it has caused me injury, though these days I really am trying to keep them short...er.

ouch!! hope ur ok! i have long nails as well, my boyfriend calls them 'daggers'. (not sure if it's a compliment haha) but i'm so used to them that i never had a problem with them...yet ! *fingers crossed*

BUT id say maybe to try to build up your nail health...try using vitamin e 2x a day or some other moisturizer (jojoba, almond oil, argon, etc) to condition and strengthen your nails. that might help prevent any future breakage :) also, u cud try a clear coat nail hardener from a drug store

hope your nail heals up soon !

Thank you!  I'm doing fine now...they grow so fast that the break is almost about the cuticle now!  Yanno, I actually have very strong nails, normally.  It's just that I did a whole lot of cleaning sans gloves the previous couple of days and the chemicals tend to make them more brittle.  Yeowch.

Yes! I've dealt with this so many times. I bit my nails forever, until a few of years ago I just stopped and got these gorgeous nails! Then hooping quickly destroyed them lol. I just make sure to use a nail hardener coat and a pretty polish, and that seems to help a bit. I also mention to my students to do the same thing if their nails are important to them lol.

Ouch! I hate it when that happens... I for one don't have very strong nails so this is a problem I come across often, which is why I keep them fairly short. Taking proper care of them as Cass and Heather said should help, eps. moisturizing cuticles can do wonders. (You guys have Lush, the store? Try lemony flutter, its great for your nails.)

Be careful with nail hardeners, some are amazing and some will only make your nails weaker.. Read up on it a bit but it can definitely help :)

I also have long-ish nails  because they grow faster than I can get around to cutting them.  Just a few weeks ago, I went to grab the hoop up from around my knees and accidentally gouged my nails into my calf just behind the knee. There was blood all over the place... Ouch!!

I feel your pain because I broke 5 nails this week while hooping and another one taking the garbage out last night!! :O I cut the remaining ones down as short as possible this morning. Mine grow way too fast too and I can't seem to keep up with them. I also paint so I never bother doing my nails because they always get messed up anyway. :( Keeping them shorter and putting on some clear polish or seems to help when I remember to do so...

5 in a week?!  Yikes!

I have the same problem. my nails grow like crazy!! If I don't keep them short they are getting cracked and broken all the time! I've even used the Sally Henson Nail Hardener and it doesn't help. you just gotta keep your nails short :-/
