Ok...so I have to share what Ive been up too.
Now this may go against some hoopers values.....I dont know...but I still have to share!
(I say this because, I guess, hooping is about flow...and feeling to me...but I had an idea and had to run with it)

I started teaching at a local middle school in mid October as an after school program. Pretty much non-profit. The girls just showed up to a meeting and decided if they wanted to hoop after school or not. There where no qualifications except I could only teach 14 girls. So it came down to first come first serve. I pushed the idea of fitness, hooping being something to do at home besides tv.

I ended up with 13 girls, 1 2nd grader, 6,7,8th graders and the school secretary. :) I supply them there hoops for class...measured a hoop for every student. I also gave them the ability to buy a hoop for home for cheap, attempting to reach those kids in low income, and possible not much of an active home.

The idea came to me to have them perform. We are planning on doing half time at games...and just did our first parade. What a challenge! I have never made a routine for a song before..hence the values of hooping. The girls where all about it tho! To get 13 girls to hoop in unison is tricky! Now not all the girls could do the routine...some had fallen behind in learning the skills, but they where still involved in the parade..they took what they did know and did it. I hate to be judgmental in hooping! And that was ruff! "You have to get this routine down!" was very difficult to say. They are just beginners and to do it in unison!! What am I asking of them!!!!

Either way they did it! and where very proud. It rained..and sleeted, and was cold. They dropped the hoop as did I but it was wet! lol..and I stressed them dropping it in practice! It was the first time they hooped in the rain & in public.

Anyway....I thought I would share this EVENT because to me...doing this as an after school program, and getting these girls not only to learn hooping, taking it home with them and getting them off the couch, but has brought them together as a unit, and not only made hooping to them as a fitness, dance, and stress re-leaver but something they have done as a group, in public. And enjoyed it!

I always wanted to teach....and am going to add new schools in January and add another beginners class to the current school I am at and bump these girls I am currently working with to intermediate. This has been a very soul satisfying venture! I suggest it to those who love to work with kids, want to teach hoop, and want to give back to the community!

Since I first felt confident enough in my own hooping to start spreading hoop love, I have wanted to do something like this. I contacted the coach of my old juggling team to see if I could go out and add some hoopers to the team, but he was semi retired, so I don't even know if he got my message. This is so cool, kudos to you :) I wish this had been available to me afterschool when I was a kid!
I am not certified.....I just went to the principle and asked if ?I could do it. He told me that I had to be insured....and had to get it cleared threw the school bored. Thats IT!
i wish my school had an after school hoop program :( that would be awesome!
Bravo, it is definitely harder to teach younger people I think. I tried it here once but it was really hard to explain to someone who doesn't speak English how to do hoop moves and they were really young kids as well who didn't understand my accent much. So props to you! And even better that you're gonna keep at it, I'm sure those kids love you.
That is so awesome...what a wonderful idea! I might do something like this next year. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm glad you shared your experience. I have been thinking about doing something like this with my neighborhood school, where I have been doing after-school & other arts ed work for over 15 years. Cool!!!
I think what you are doing is terrific! I've coached cheerleading in the past and the kids loved it when i would bring a hoop to practice. I think making it into a team is totally fine! and just like any dance, the dynamic is different in a group, but the effect is much more powerful. keep up the good work. I'm sure you are inspiring these young women a lot and making a difference in their lives and the community.
I too work in an after school program for middle school age kids. It's sort of like the programs the YMCA offers at some schools for kids whose parents work late. I have made hoops with the kids (art activity) and been teaching the children who are interested some hoop moves. The ones who enjoy it really get into it but we have limited time to work (i'm the only adult and not all the kids are into hooping). The gym teacher has approached me about hooping for her classes and we are working out times now maybe i'll be able to pique the interest of a few new hoopers.

ps- I can't choreograph for myself much less a group good job! and way to go in the parade I just hooped in the parade here Friday and it was a tough workout without following a routine great job to you and the kids!
The way I worked it was to have all the girls on monday for an hour...and half on tues and half on fri...also for an hour...it isnt much time...but splitting the classes made it so everyone was together once and then we have 2 classes where they get more one on one attention. I know they like tues and fri better. I am very proud...and if I dont see them for a week(like school vaca) I miss em :)
ty for all the "props" thought i'd share just so others could spread the love to there school system :)
