I've been practicing some different acts to keep every performance as different and interesting as possible. I've been practicing human blockhead (w/ Q-tips) for a couple of days now. Before moving on to cold steel I was wondering if any performers have heard of any bad side affects from this act. I've researched online and couldn't find anything but I like to make sure before committing to adding this to my show.

no - just know how it works and practice. i dated a guy for a long time who blockheaded with 6 inch railroad ties, and even a drill. he also put condoms in his nose and out his mouth (blech). I've never heard of any bad side effects from this act. I started doing it a little bit (3 inches nails and of course starts with q-tips). i personally just don't care for the way it feels but i dno't think you could expect any ill effects.

yup I've done the research on how it works, thanks for clearing that up for me.

Yeah the odd feeling of it going in makes my eyes water but i'll get use to it the more I practice.:)

I didn't know what this was so I had to google it.... And... Wow.  Mika, you're a badass performer ;-)
I've seen SaFire perform this act several times. I think I was great for her act because I could never get used to it and it really freaked me out so I'd make a lot of noise every time she did it. I DO know that there are some very real dangers in doing it. If your nails are too long or you are not careful, there is as I understand it the danger of puncturing through and making the brain vulnerable to infection. Please be careful!
My boyfriend's sister does this. She hammers a nail into her nose, has someone from the audience pull on it and move it a little so they know its real, and lets them pry it out with the forked end of the hammer. Crazy stuff. She said she had to pierce the membranes in her nose to allow the long nail to go in, but after that, there was no damage.... I just tried for about 20 minutes to find her video and can't find it. She used to date a hooper in NYC lol. Her performing name is aMan!duh lol
Yes Safire rocks the human blockhead!! I'm sure she has lots tips for ya!

Hey Carisa here,

The biggest danger with block head for most people is scratching or irritating the inside of the sinus cavity. I'm concerned about you practicing with Q-tips as the ruff surface may cause irritation and there is always the chance that a bit of cotton will become lagged in the face while practicing.

I always recommend to get crochet or knitting needles. They come in a variety of gauges so you can work up in size like a piercing. They have rounded ends, smooth surface that will be easier on you sinuses and they are tapered which also helps. Always make sure you are cleaning you implements and keep in mind it should not hurt, a feeling of pressure but no pain. If it hurts back off, it may be swollen from over practice or the presence of some other irritant.

Be careful and goodluck :)
