I am someone who is not a great dancer, can't really keep a beat... just not rhythmically inclined. I'm also not really an athlete (though I did do a zumba class last semester and sort of did okay).

I'm slowly learning a few tricks so I can do more than just waist hoop for hours on end but it's slow going. I don't have a "flow" and can't imagine how to start having one!

Is anyone else here a hooper who generally has no rhythm? Am I doomed? Can I learn to have rhythm? Any advice is welcome!

I have never been a dancer by any means, and rhythm has always been a far off dream. But, since I have begun my flow journey, first through poi and now through hooping, I have made serious progress. I can, in fact, dance. Not very well, but it gets better every time I get in the flow zone, I swear. Worry not!!

Take a few more dance classes, or music class. The really help a lot.

I really love how encouraging all of these posts are! I agree flow will come. I look back at vids I made even just a couple months ago and see incredible changes in my movements. It really is all about loving the process, have you seen that video yet? If not search it, I got all teary when I did. Its nice to realize that someone as graceful as Safire started at the beginning at well. We all have a beautiful current within sometimes we just have to breakthrough the fuzz.

Rhythm can be learned! :) When I started latin dancing several years ago, my partner had no rhythm what so ever and it was quite annoying because he never knew when to start. But after a year or so he actually got it and can hear and move to it now :) but like, in general^^

So just dont give up :) maybe some dance classes would help?

I have really good rhythm naturally but my favourite dancer once said this in a workshop to us: get yourself a metronome (or use this one) and just have it running at home in the background, for hours. Just get used to it, maybe you'll find yourself tapping your feet or stirring the soup or moving the vacuum in time to the beat. It'll annoy the heck out of you and you'll find the rhythm slowly seeping into your skin.

Hoop with your heart. :)

I felt the same way for a long time, but I have seen subtle improvements in just letting my inhibitions go and following the natural movement of the hoop.

Don't give up! Your flow is already there inside of you! :)

I can hear myself saying all these things a year ago. Never give up, practice really makes progress! You'll find a dancer hiding inside yourself you thought didnt exist.

Thank you! Everyone is so encouraging and wonderful!
