After getting inspired by Grimm's fans to double mini hoops vid, I have a series of questions for any fire fan freaks.

Does anybody have any experience with fire fans? I've been looking for a pair of fire fans that would be good for speed and inside technical moves. (can you tell I've got a poi background?) Im looking to find out which ones sold out there you all like for quicker moves and changes. Ive looked at Fire by Riz, HoP, Trick Concepts, BearClawmfg, Fire Mecca, Gora Fire, Firestuff, and Firetoyz. I cant really get a feel for whats a good size and weight but I don't know anyone who has fans.

Ive also got an itch to build my own fans. I kind of want to use braided cables from the wicks to about halfway down, similar to the hoops from cosmicfire and firedrums. After that, I was thinking to try attaching the cable somehow into an aluminum or steel tube before finishing the fans. Does anyone have an opinion on if that would work?

And lastly, I want the fans I build to be spring-loaded and collapsible. The best ones I've found for that so far are the ones by Firestuff (NZ) or the custom ones by Sage (TX). Any ideas on the best way to spring-load a collapsible fan?

try mystiktoyz.com they have fans, and a collapsible fan, but i don't think it's spring loaded? i've played with a pair at a festival last month and they're pretty amazing and good quality.
Did you play with solid fans or the folding ones? The Mystic fans are the same solid ones made by Fire Mecca. Mecca has them on sale right now for $129. However, they're heavier, at 2 lbs, than most of the other ones out there. Did you find them to be slow at all to spin, or can you whip em around ok? I gotta admit, I love Fire Mecca's stuff. I got my poi, staff, and custom chains through them.
i played with both the solid and folding(um, although i did NOT know what i was doing they just look so badass) i was foolin around. you would think that the solid ones would be more hardy, but the folding ones give you a couple more options as far as moves(depends on the control of your fingers, right?) the one thing i don't like about the folding one is if you're a beginner...you'll pinch your skin alot

i'd really like to get a set of fans one day. but i need to give my fire hoop sum love for now....
oh, btw, y'all need to check out these ones by Firestuff.com Its too bad its so expensive. It'd be almost 300 after shipping. :( http://www.firestuffonline.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_inf...
Those are probably the closest to the kind of fans I want to build, but I can't figure out a spring system.
ok.....the firestuff spring loader fan is WAY nicer than the folding fan i saw thru mystic toys
yah, its uber nice. It drives me nuts that I cant figure out how to build a set. Im going to have to go through a lot of testing and stuff to do this right.
Just an update, but Trick Concepts just released a heavy duty version of their Khaos fan, specifically meant to withstand drops and things a bit better. http://www.trickconcepts.com/Heavy-Weight-Khaos-Fire-Fans-P188C7.aspx I also like the update to their grip on the Khaos. It feels like they knew I was looking for a fan and came out with what I wanted. :) Super score! :)
Hi Mike,

It looks like you've found what you needed in the end, but i still thought perhaps i should update you on the FireStuff fans.

We recently were able to drop the price massively to be more competitive with the likes of the Gora & Sage fans, but at US$210inc freight to usa we appreciate they are still possibly the most expensive fire fans on the market.

To build your own would be a long process of trial and error, it took us almost a year to get the design to a point we were happy selling it (when your based on the bottom of the world you do not want to be dealing with stock returns ;o) ), and we are still looking for ways to improve a). how good it works and b). reducing the price, however unfortunately most things that improve b). stop us from reaching a).

Regarding your idea for the fan with stainless cable fan fingers, that could present issues as the fingers would have a mind of their own and wobble a lot during a performance.
Hey, thanks! I may still look you up for folding fans at some point, because Firestuff's fans are simply the nicest I've seen.
Thanks mike, we always appreciate feedback, when/if you ever get your hands on them were sure you'll find them the nicest to use also.

We are looking for distributors in the northern hemisphere, so if you know of any, feel free to drop them some hints on our behalf ;o) Very soon though they will be sold via Home of Poi also, i believe their international freight rates may be better than ours also so possibly a cheaper way again to get them into your own hands also.

The next stage in the fan development is a finger spin ring, were just playing around with the placement of the ring presently, so that's something to look forwards also, and perhaps a world first as far as folding fans are concerned.
That's excellent. I was thinking about welding a ring onto the little tab, off of the center spoke, for just that very purpose.

Im psyched to hear about all your product and distribution developments. Perhaps Fire Mecca, based in Arizona, would be an option for a N.A. distributor. European, I'd say Firetoyz and Feuershow.de would have the best systems in place to manage your product. All three of those companies have other products on their sites which they handle for different manufacturers.

Whatever the case, I think I'll be starting a new savings stash for those fans of yours. :)
Has anyone tried Luxotica.com's stuff? I am thinking about getting fire fans...which ones do you recommend?
