Greetings lovely hoopers!

Anyone had much experience putting together a routine with a class or a group of friends? I've got some ideas batting around my head and was curious to see what experiences you all have had.

What element of the music do you find it easiest to choreograph too? on the 8 count? 32 count phrases? or just breaking the song down into parts. This song I really want to work with has a lot of measure changes and may be hard to keep count on, but not impossible...

....? :)

Hey hun,

I second that! Having everyone familiar with the song is key. Counting out the beats is incredibly useful both when working in sync performing the same moves or when doing a call and response kind of choreography. Call and response is one you take turns dazzling the crowd. The most important thing in that style of choreography is that when one hooper is not the focus that they are still drawing attention to the other hooper through what's call "directed focus." They should be looking at the other hooper to encourage the audience in where to look.

Personally, I find longer beat counts to be easier because the song ends up being broken into a few large chunks instead of a whole bunch of small ones.

Another point to mention is to make sure that both or all hoopers are closely linked in skill level. It's incredibly unfair to force a hooper to perform moves they aren't comfortable with yet because in the end it they look sloppy and the other hooper looks good. So keep that one in mind, you're a killer hooper and hard to keep up with. ; )

Here's some sample videos for inspiration:

Thanks for the lovely reply ladies!!!

I uploaded the track we are using to my profile player its called mission by Beats Antique! Its amazing! :)
I have emailed all my students the track so they have been able to listen to it for a week or so, and our first class isn't until Wed. I wanted to have them bring their ideas to the table too, I wanted to hear what this song does for them.

I plan on keeping the choreography rather simple, a lot of flip isolations, walking, lunging, crouching, very emotional and sensational instead of trick heavy.

Thanks for posting these videos! I love my girl Breeze. I cannot wait to play with her at Symbiosis this year.

I'll keep you posted on how things are working out!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply! :)

Right on!

Other suggestions:

Tell the girls to listen to the song and visualize themselves hooping, then hoop to it. Most of my choreography happens in my head first.

How many girls do you have? With enough of them you could do some really neat movements as they walk around each other and create shapes.

Here's a great video that demonstrates how effective segregating the group can be, separating them, pausing some, playing with levels and then bringing them all back together in unison.

THankS so much for all the replies so far! so we had our first class last night and it went GREAT!
:) We have broken down the song into 8 counts. its great because the song is structured with 4 phrases of 8 counts. which is making it easier on us!

I am so excited to share this with the hoop community!! !:) <3
I'm probably the oddball. I'm an on paper choreographer. I start with a list of moves I want to incorporate and I link them together on paper into short 8 count combinations that I think will flow. Then I try them out with the music and switch the 8 count combos around until I find a way that they punctuate the music well. Maybe my method comes from being a science nerd. idk
HI Ladies!!!!! we finally finished the routine and got to perform it at a hoop birthday party!!! it couldn't have been more perfect!!!!

Here is the clip! We should have a better version on the way but I just cannot wait to share it with you!
It is really great Megz. I really love how you were coordinated all 3 of you. Usually when there is more hoopers and all off them do their things it really bothers me because you can't fully concentrate and appreciate all of them at the same time.
Great job!
