So...i've been hooping for a few years and am hesitant to buy an LED. I feel that LED is all show, and that it takes away from the real beauty of hoop dance and replaces it with bright, strobe,  flashing lights....  They give me the feeling that anything you do will look cool, so it's like all for show?

I think they look beautiful, but I don't know...just something about them is silly to me. Am I being stupid?

i agree, about SOME LEDs.  I really dont like strobes/flashy LEDs. I think they are terribly annoying and seizure giving.  But I loove stable LED hoops, I think they make hooping a lot more fun/nightclub worthy :]

Hooper friends lately are telling me to buy an atomic and I'm just like NOOOOOOOO.  They are pretty ugly to me!  I also think they take away from the dancer.  But...to each their own!

I think they're pretty. And if I had lots of extra money, I'd have one, maybe several, why not. Just like if I had lots of extra money, I'd have a super-special fancy fun car.

However, an LED hoop isn't something on my wish list. It might well be if i were a performer. But as it is, if a hoop is a nice size and weight for me and it *works* for me, I'm thrilled. I don't care if it's pretty or not. My  favorite hoop was pretty at one time.. Now the tape is faded and mangled, and it's still my favorite. At this point, LED would be fun, yes.. if I decided to hoop at night, in the dark. But other than that, it would be the $200 hoop I wouldn't use for fear of breaking it, would never ever let my 12 year old daughter use (even though she's better at hooping than me) and would generally stress about.

LED's arent even just about show. Theyre beautiful for night hooping. We can actually enjoy the feel of our hoop learning new things in the night. Isolations are amazing when theres nothing but darkness around you and its only your hoop thats lit up. All of the same tricks look just as good in daylight as with an LED. Yes someone who hasnt learnt much or practiced can order an LED and have a group of people surround them and tell them how wonderful they are. But that shouldnt change the fact that its a night hoop, and thats what its used for.
I dont mean to be rude. But I think youre being silly. And the girl who commented below you, silly as well. Do you see someone whos a wonderful hooper light up his or her led in the night and turn your nose up?

LED doesn't appeal to me like hooping with a regular hoop does. I guess, because I really like seeing how people use their body. Hooping to me isn't about how good the hoop looks, it's about the interaction between the person and the hoop and that's what makes it so awesome.  You don't really see the body when doing LED (since it's usually in the dark), so it's not quite my cup of tea to watch.

However! I love playing with an LED. I don't have one, but one of the girls I used to hoop with did and it's really fun to do at night. Also, you can actually see your hoop if you want to do it in the dark.

Even if it was "all for show" i.e.: very little practiced hooper with a 40"  $400 smart hoop . Who cares? seriously, who cares??? Try not to judge other's skill level/choice of hoop. This is supposed to be fun!!! yay  bright flashing craziness!!!!!!

I agree 100%! I hate that people tend to forget that hooping isn't about competition. I would never walk up to someone and say anything like "Oh, I like your hooping so much better than the other person hooping over there." As someone who hasn't been hooping very long and who does it for fun and not performance, I know I wouldn't appreciate being on the "other" end of that statement, being critiqued as if I was trying to turn heads.

Everyone hoops for different reasons and at different paces of learning. That should be respected and appreciated just as the person hooping, or not hooping for that matter, should be. Spread the love with encouragement; don't discourage with criticism when it isn't asked for.

You tell it exactly like it is. :)
I have an interesting story. I was broke and went to A festival last fall and really wanted to hoop at night. So I attached some glow sticks to my hoop and spun for a while. A little later a guy came up with a camera and wanted to get some pics of it. I felt silly cause it was just glow sticks but later someone came up to me and said you should really have an led hoop so more people will see how great your hooping is. So maybe for some they are for show but maybe for others it's a good way to show ur skills at night. Like one post said people can tell who knows how to work the hoop and who still needs time to develop. But I also think if you invest in an Led then u most likely love hooping enough that it doesn't matter if it's for show or just for light at night! :) it's all about the love for the hoop. If u hoop u rock at it no matter ur skill level, reasons behind hooping or type of hoop u use!

I definitely like them, but find myself having difficulty with both the weight (I like my hoop lighter than feathers!) and all I can see is the light...plus they are expensive and have to be charged.  But, what I do like about them is the folks won't run in to you in the dark quite as much!  haha  What I ahve been doing for a while is slipping glow sticks in my polypro which was fine until late...they are like exploding inside from doing breaks!

I love my psi hoop, its only one circuit with elfins and dragonfly leds. I like to experiment with different light environments though instead of totally dark because it makes thinner, more intricate trails in twilight or predawn light. In total darkness the trails are more wide and solid, I love it when it a bit more transparent but enough to make me visible behind it. It depends I suppose what kind of hooping you're into. If you're into more meditative hooping, you may like a white led or a slow fade rainbow, or even custom order one with colors that connect with you. Or if you like minis try led minis, even one can be used separately to work on ground work or sitting hooping. I do get bored with using my led for several nights in a row, so I space it out.
