Hey guys, I'm new to Hoop City ...
I'm just curious to know about your progress. I'm a new hooper, have only been hooping for about a month... I can sucessfully do lifts, the vortex, helicopter, drop/duck in, and hoop at the shoulders and chest. I guess what I am asking is, what progress did you make at the one month mark, and where did you start? I feel like I am making decent progress, but I also feel like I may have skipped alot of necessary steps ... as I am teaching myself through tutorials on youtube. Like.. I definitly cannot do any isolated vertical spins, and I have a hard time with transitions and flow in general. I just feel like I should have learned that sort of thing at the beginning. yeah hahah so any input you may have is much appreciated !

also.. are there any maritimers roaming around these boards?

Welcome to Hoop City! Your progress sounds similar to a lot of us solitary, you-tube trained hoopers. There's this exhilarating flurry in the early months as we gobble up new moves like candy, but struggle to piece it all together. Six months into my journey, I'm realizing flow, grace, and clarity of motion (ie: clean transitions) take time.

You'll hear a lot of hoopers talk about their flight time. Anne Humphreys from The Hoop Path defines it as "The time you have spent, in an hour-to-hour ratio, hooping in your life. You may or may not have been practicing tricks. Any time you spend interacting with your hoop counts, even if the hoop is not spinning. Engaging in a full isolation of holding the hoop is one place in space and moving around it, for example, counts as flight time. Time you spend thinking or talking about hooping is not flight time. Taking a water break or a phone break during practice time does not equal flight time. Time you spend interacting with your hoop in some way, shape, or form is flight time."

I guess in the long run it's about building and expanding your comfort-zone with the hoop as you become more familiar with specific moves, the hoop's flow, and the rhythms of your body.

Best of luck!
I just started hooping . . . last night. :P So this post and the replies have been super helpful. Thanks!
Thank you for this! I'm new to this, and have had trouble with combinations and keeping a nice flow. I'm in the process of learning to chest hoop right now. :/ Frustrating! But again, thanks for putting this up here! :D

Swizzy Ape

a way out of the hoop

I'm stuck in a loop with the hula hoop. When I was a little girl I was abused in every which way. Often I was grounded to my bedroom, with two bathroom visits and a dinner release. In my bedroom held my boom box. Loud music would draw my angry step father towards my room. But I had to dance, so from a young age I would take a few preventable beatings so I could dance in my bedroom. Pretending I'm dancing on stage with Brain Setzer, I had trained myself to ingore reality while I dance. Even…

I haven't posted for a very long time, but I have something worth sharing.  In the last couple of years, I have advanced enough to start teaching and I absolutley love my classes.  All my students are wonderful its the most favorite part of my week. Through a very unfortunate series of events, every hoop I own, including my hoops for students, were taken and no longer in my possession. I was so upset ,not for myself, but my students would have nothing to take class with. There…
