Hello hoopers, I feel I need to get something off of my chest.
Just over a year ago, now I discovered the beautiful hoop and art of hoop dance. I love it and cherish my hoops more than anything. After hooping for about 6 months, alone. (I live in a small town and there was only one other girl who hooped when I started) I finally found a friend to teach. And she's amazing and wonderful and we've been making and selling hoops for a while now. We have both contributed so much into helping this community grow, and I truly am stoked on all of the progress and all of the people that can just get together in the park and hoop with us. But after hula hooping just a couple times one of the girls bought two leds. Which is great, I don't have anything against that. Other than we got kicked out of 2 out of 3 of the bars in town for hula hooping, something to do with the policy... We're careful and haven't hit anybody ever, we're both in control of the movement of the hoop. But this girl just started. and I don't have any doubt that she has goals to also be in control of it, but she likes to get drunk and go out and party, and I see this turning out to be a problem in the long run. I'm scared that the LAST place in town that still allows us to hoop indoors is going to one day just turn us away. :( I feel the day is coming.
And also, I just got back from Shambhala. And there was so many hoopers there, new and experienced. It had me smiling ear to ear everywhere I went. Except one night when I tried so hard to get up and hoop on the pagoda, and no one would allow me to. Yet I got VIP on the village stage for my hula hooping. Then next thing, I look up and there's a hooper up there, just vertically waving around her led hoop. and then I started to notice that's all that alot of the girls with leds were doing. This made me realize it's why most people say "oh you could throw it across a field and it will look cool" because no one actually shows their performing skills with it just waving around in the air...

Heya!

First off that is so amazing that you started getting people involved in some serious hooping! Thats wonderful! I wish I had more hoopers in my sphere :)

Yeah its a bummer when one persons poor behaviour causes a bar or other venue to create new restrictions. I love hula hooping to live music, and i wish there were more place around that I could hoop and be free in... not just concerts. As for the LED stuff.... I have total LED envy, I really want one! At night especially they are very impressive ... and compared to a regular hoop can actually be seen at night. Its hard not to hate sometimes, but its not about skill, its about enjoyment, lets try and love all our fellow hoopers. Maybe explain to the drunk hoop girl that she needs to just stick to some moves she is really comfortable with, because as hoopers we do need to be careful of those around us. Or find an area to hoop where there is more space and she can really let loose. I dunno I hope this helps....

I have to agree that baddass hoopers aren't the only ones with rights to hoop in public venues, but as the ones with more experience, we do have a responsibility to give gentle guidance to people who aren't yet as aware of the space they are in or the space they really need to have to safely hoop so you can all share the space and not get kicked out or get a bad rap!

That's awesome you got to hoop at the village stage at Shams!!!! Way to go! It must have been incredible.

With respect to getting on to the main stage at Pagoda though, you need to either actually be a performer, or to be "know" someone, Was the vertical hoop holding at Zed's Dead by chance? If so, that was my LED, which I lent to a novice hooper who was given a pass by someone who wanted to impress her and give her the opportunity of a lifetime.

It was awesome to see so many hoopers out this year. I had the most epic hoop jams of my life at the beach this year, not to mention really enjoyed the topless hoop jam at the fractal funk jam. Now that was a mad throwdown!

I didn't get to hoop at the village:( It was way too crammed up there with people. It was during Dub FX and Pretty Lights!

It was around that time yes, I think right before zeds dead. AHHHH That's actually such a great story, beautiful that you helped her get that opportunity. So many miracles at shambhala!

I wish I knew about that ! I would have been so on it. I cannot wait to see videos of all of the massive hoop jams.

I'd even consider talking to the manager at the bar that lets you hoop there. Tell him, "Hey, we have this friend who's fairly new at hooping, but she tends to do it when she's drunk, which isn't the best scenario in bars. We'd love to talk with you about setting a policy for hoopers in your bar."

Perhaps they can have a rule where if you're hooping and you're drunk and being annoying or hitting people, you lose the privilege. Or only folks who check in with management can hoop, or something. There's got to be a way to work around it.

Good luck!

(Also, I know this from experience—more than two drinks and I can't hold onto the hoop for sh!t. And I have embarrassed myself in a bar once. Once was enough. It hasn't happened again. I only hoop publicly sober now.)
