In less time it takes Phileas Fogg to travel around the world I will be leaving for an epic road trip across county to teach, share, and spread my love of hooping to as many hoop communities and people as I possibly can. And like my intrepid counterpart I leave with the barest of materials on my quest; my car and hoops. I will be heading to Burning Man and then eventually back to the East Coast (to pick up my cat; who will no doubt be mad at me for leaving her). I leave from Boston to Wildfire in Ashfort CT August 17 then when it is over on the 20th I leave onward…returning to Boston on the 24th of Sept.
I need to be at Burning Man in Blackrock City in Nevada on the 27th, Pacific Fire in OR on Sept 13-16 and September Wildfire on 21st. I also need to have an exact time locked up somewhere around the 10th of Sept to get my monthly mediation at a hospital for my Multiple Sclerosis. Otherwise I have no restraints and no mandate of whom I meet or where I go save this: Meet as many Hoopers and share as much knowledge, love, and friendship as I possibly can in the 39 days I am gone.
I am forsaking materialism. I am living simply to share my art and be the person I want to be. I am leaping before looking and not even going to have a home to call my own as I am letting my lease run up and then letting fate and my dreams take me. My day job will be waiting if it’s what I want to return to, but I will be living freely.
Which brings me to You, you beautiful people you. I want to me you. I want to see Your hooping community and teach, share, and be a part of your community for the evening. I want to understand what different hooping communities are like whether it’s just the 2-3 of you in your town or 50 large I want to teach for free accepting donations for gas and travel and maybe a place to stay the night. My goal is to drive 8 hours, hoop and play for 8 hours, sleep for 8 hours. I will be so hippy-hoop-afied, perma-grinning, PLUR embodied that I promise I will be the embodiment of The Hooping Fairy come to bring gifts of tricks, style pointers, and general good cheer.
With less than 80 days left till I leave I wanted to start to put the word out and see who, where, and what communities out there might like to put me up for the night and let me a part of your community of spinners/hoopers for the night? Also what night of week might be best (i.e. when do you have your spinjams or practices)? I don’t know how many I can fit in or if I will get to you all but I will try my best. I am not well known outside of my little part of the world as much as some of my friends and teachers but I am hoping that maybe some Hooping All-stars will put a post or two of good word for me.
I am primarily a double/mini hooper but I am a dancer and have good skills and technique with single hoop to teach as well, particularly off body work. I have been teaching for over two years now at Wildfire Retreat and in the Boston area. I am a big believer in giving back to my community. Hooping saved my life in more than one way. I lost well over a 100lbs hooping; I have battled my Multiple Slerosis from barely able to walk to debuting as a professional dancer this year; I have battled depression and trauma and come through it all. And now I am the person I was always meant to be. I can’t wait to meet you all and hear your stories!

Permalink Reply by Jessi on June 1, 2012 at 10:20am This sounds amazing! I did a similar trip last year (I'm from Baltimore) I was on the road for 4 months it was awesome! I cant help you with places to stay since I'm also from the east coast, but if you are traveling on a budget or just love to camp get a map of BLM and National Forest land/campgrounds. You can camp anywhere where there is already a campsite for free and if you do stumble across a campground they are usually no more then $5 and they may even have potable water so you can refill your jugs! You are bound to meet some amazing people, especially when your on your way out to the burn! I may even run into you! Good luck!
Permalink Reply by Tyler Icarus on July 15, 2012 at 11:24am Thanks a bunch! I do hope to run into you at the Burn if you are going too. I haven't decided on a camp but might be a spincycle. If you see a stocky guy with two mini hoops jumping through 18 inch hoops and spinning two on one hand that would be me. :)
Permalink Reply by Tyler Icarus on July 15, 2012 at 11:26am It's starting to come up on trip time. I am hoping to start making some connections for legs of my trip to meet up with spinners. If you are in the central part of the country or on the west coast and don't mind putting up a hooper for the night and having a guest teacher come out teaching for free/donations only than hit me up!
Permalink Reply by Tyler Icarus on July 15, 2012 at 11:28am I am great at teaching hoop tosses, off body, and double work. All are possibilities for classes.
Permalink Reply by Cycloid Mary on July 16, 2012 at 2:09am You'll be at Pacific Fire?!?!?! Yayyyy that just made my night.
Permalink Reply by Tyler Icarus on July 17, 2012 at 12:04am Yup! I am so excited about Pacific Fire. I used to live in Oregon a long time ago and haven't been back in a long time. I can't wait to see west coast spinning and what kind of energy is there. I'll be teaching at least a couple classes I hope :) I didn't know you would be there too!
