Hello all you lovely hoop children!!! I have been trying to get in touch with groups to learn more about Native American hoop dancing. I was so amazed and inspired when I first witnessed this beautiful style of dancing and storytelling. I've been hooping with twins for about a year now and this style seemed to open up to me at the perfect time on my path with hoops. I'm also interested to learn more about my heritage through this type of hoop dance. Any help getting in touch with any of these groups would be greatly appreciated!!!

All I can offer is I took a private in Native American hoop dance with a girl named Alley 'Oop who has studied with natives and was allowed to pass on these teachings. She lives in Vancouver and will be a presenter at Hoop Convergence again this year. I just tried her contact info on the website for Hoop Convergence but it says it has been disabled. Check back there in a bit if you don't get any other leads. I was so impressed by what I learned that day and we of course only skimmed the surface. I also have a customer who just asked me to make him 7 hoops for a class he is about to start in Native hoop dance. I will try to find out where he is studying. He is in NY.
Good luck!
Thank you so much!! I'm in New York quite a bit so that would be amazing.
I am in New York too, and I would love to know about the guy you mentioned. Is he taking the class or teaching the class?
I have a friend who is SO into this. I visited her in Tallahassee and she showed me TONS of YouTube videos about it.
I sent her an invite to Hoop City, but I will pm you her contact info for now.
Thank you!!!
Soo Z has taken several of the Native Hoop Dance classes in the city. She loved them! She has a page up here and she's in the New York Group.
At this moment she's out at Pier 45 on the Hudson River hooping so you'll have to wait until she gets home, LOL.
Native American Hoop Dance Classes are offered in Dance New Amsterdam in NYC

Sorry, the above is where they're located. This is their official website:

Thought I'd share this video. The beginning is a great example of how Native American hoop formations can be incorporated into modern hoopdance.

I wanted to reply specifically to Tangled Macrame's video post. I felt called to comment on what you refer to as modern hoop dance. Native American hoop dance is just as modern as the style that is arising in the community which is starting on this website and around the world. The hoop dance that is evolving in Native communities is a living dance. I don't mean this as a slight against you in any way, I've just been reflecting a lot on the current and past struggles and achievements of Native communities in this country. I believe the fusion of these two communities that seem so separate to many Americas is very important and will help to heal the earth and the rift between cultures in the United States. I think we are all dancing with hoops for a very similar reason and it brings me so much joy this happening. Thank you for this post, it gave me the chance to voice something that has been on my mind for a long time.

Love, Sam Shine
Couldn't agree more...

Great response!  I agree, although we're also going to need to address the extreme poverty, addiction, and abuse that prevails on reservations and finally acknowledge the suffering this country has put its native peoples through.

Also toss out all that nasty cultural appropriation and change a handful of sports teams names :/

Edit:  Whoa, just realized this post is hecka old.  whoops. ^^

Hi! I am a teacher of native american hoop dance and would be happy to answer any of your questions!
