I have been toying with an idea about having random giveaways.  I am pretty sure no one really knows what I do for a living. :) I work in Aviation for a living and arrange charter flights for individuals and businesses who need to travel across the country in corporate type aircraft (propeller, turbo props and jets).  I was considering sending the crew on the road with a take apart "quad" hoops I made(HOOpnDaddy Hoops) to give them away to Hoopcity friends who live in those towns.  I considered trying to work out trades with other hoop makers(would love to collect other hoop artist hoops) or crafters, but space is usually limited on the aircraft we use.

I know some people look at something that is given to them as not of any value and not worth putting in a lot of effort. These are valued at $45. I think it would just be fun to get them out there for people to play with(and I have an overstock). :)

Some sample cities we go to: Milwaukee,WI,  Madison,WI, Waukesha,WI, Chicago,IL, Palm Beach,FL,  Toronto,Ontario(customs may make this impossible), Detroit,MI, Marysville,OH, Cleveland,OH, Teterboro,NJ, Washington DC, Nashville,TN, San Diego,CA, Los Angeles,CA, Minneapolis,MN,  Charleston,SC, St. Louis,MO, and many other cities.

Questions:

Do you think you would go to the local airport to pickup a "free" hoop?  I wouldn't want to go through the effort if they will not be picked up.

Random drawing based on "ACTIVE" Hoopcity members located in the cities the aircraft is

traveling?

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.  THANKS!! :)

REALLY??? My friend just arrived in Portland earlier today from Michigan.  Could have sent one out with her.  :(
Dang. I just saw your post a few minutes ago. If one of your friends makes it out this way again I would love to meet them at PDX.

Wow how wonderful! I would totally be interested.

When you say Detroit, MI do you mean the small airpot in Detroit or the big one out in Romulus?

Detroit, MI = YIP -Willow Run Airport, DET - Detroit City(Coleman Young airport), ARB - Ann Arbor Airport, PTK - Pontiac Airport, DTW - Detroit Metro airport.

We go to all of those airports, and Detroit City airport just about every other week. Are you near Detroit City airport?  We have an aircraft there right now actually getting ready to leave, but unfortunately I didnt send it out  with a hoop.  :(

I'm about 10 minutes from the coleman young airport, and only about 45 minutes from the rest.

Ok, here is something I need advice on.

1) Do I prearrange the winner of each hoop or do I make it a contest on who can get to the airport the fastest?

2) Do I leave it at the desk or do I have the pilots hold on to it until someone shows up?

We normally fly into the corporate/general aviation terminals (aka F.B.O.'s) at the airport, not the airline terminal.  It is where the non airline aircraft go to on the airports.

3) How do I determine a winner?

4) How do I find out who is an active hoopcity member from that town?

I have also found that when things are given to someone as "free", they look at the item as having no value and is treated that way.  If I left a "free" hoop for someone at an airport so they could pick it up, would they anxiously go get it OR look at is as having no value, not worth the gas to get there or even possibly forget about it?

Thoughts? Ideas?  Suggestions?

I would like to announce the winners on here also somewhere. Suggestions on an area to do it?

Wise knowledge I picked up from my grandfather:

I asked my grandfather why he sold a litter of puppies the family dog had for $5 each.  I told him why bother charging such a cheap amount. Why not just give away.  He said if he gave them away people treated the dogs as having no value and they were not treated very well. When he charged even a small amount, such as $5, people had in the back of their head that they paid money for the dog and tended to treat it with more respect and kindness.  I thought about and the people who had the puppies.  He was right.  The dogs that cost "$5" were regularly taken to vets and were part of the family most of the time.  The "free" dogs I saw, were left outside through all seasons(snow and cold also) and were barely taken care of.  Funny how that works I guess.

I wouldn't make it a contest to see who gets to the airport quickest. If I were to meet someone at PDX I would be driving 24 miles. It would be a bummer to spend that much money on gas to get there and find out you just missed it.

I don't feel like "free" is bad, especially if someone is going to travel for a hoop. I guess it really depends on the person though.

I'm not sure on the other three.

Great questions!

1- I would prearrange a winner. Racing to the airport is never fun & sounds dangerous.

2- I'm not sure how the process works but wouldnt the pilots get held up if something were to happen (lets just say car accident, or another emergency) and a hooper didnt show up to retrieve their hoop? Are you even able to leave items at the front desk? They both seem like good ideas, I'm just not very knowledgeable with how airports work. Besides aircrafts coming and going haha.

3- Determining a winner is going to be tough. It think it shouldnt be about skill since hoopcity has everyone from beginners to professional teachers. If you pick winners on hoopcity and not make it a facebook correlated contest it should be a fair random chance for anyone. It sucks getting excited to enter a contest or send in a video but get let down because we cant "like" them on fb or post on their wall or something. Not everyone has a facebook.

4- Find out if they're an active hoopcity member by looking at their discussions maybe? If they are helping others by putting in their input on other threads/pictures/videos, starting threads, organizing hoop jams, & sharing their own ideas, experiences, and videos.

I cant speak for anyone else but I dont see something free as having no value. Some of my most valued items were free. I would be excited to receive another hand made hoop from a fellow hooper. If somone looks at that as a waste of gas or not worth the time and effort then that is their loss.

You can always announce the winners on this thread? Keep us checking back for more!

Absolutely!  I love trying every hoop I possibly can.  Each hoop has a unique feel it's awesome!  My collection of hoops consists of ones i've made and an LED from illumi-nation.  I currently don't have a collapsible either, traveling with hoops is hard! To expand with others ideas would be terrific.  I live in Delaware but totally would drive to d.c. it would give me an excuse to visit some friends as well!
Here's my opinion on things...

I'm currently a college student who doesn't have much time or money.  I hoop when I can which is usually no more than a few times a week.  I currently only own a 42" hoop that's 2 lbs.   I've been thinking about switching to a new hoop that's smaller and lighter because I don't get the speed that I want with the size of hoop that I have.  Hooping has to be put on the backburner with my lack of funds, moving expenses I'm saving up for and time restrictions.  So I have been putting off buying a smaller hoop for the past few months.  I see the few things that I have currently as gold and I try to take as much care of them as possible.  Whether it be free or 5 dollars, I would be happy to own one but it's a decision left up to you.  I'm currently in the Palatine/Schaumburg area which is in the west burbs of Chicago.
Hooping family of 5 in Charleston, SC and I would absoluetly come to the airport for a hoop!! I'd be glad to trade one of mine but I've never tried to make a collapsible one and space might be an issue for it to come back to you. This is a pretty sweet idea! If you are ever in the Charleston area, we would love to have a hoop jam session with you!

I know this is an old post but if you still need feedback - I hate LAX but would be the first one there to get a hoop!  The fact that you would even consider this says a lot about who you are.
