How old are you? 25

When did you first start hooping? Right after my Grandma passed away, I need something to let out my sadness, but make my happy at all the same time and hooping has done that for me. This was in the begging of Janurary and now I'm hooked

Would you call yourself a beginner, intermediate or advanced hooper? Begginer big time

How often do you hoop? As often as i can and my back allows me to.

Do you have an indoor hoop space? I practice sometimes at my house, but it's really small or at a school cafeteria I volunteer at.

Is there a hoop group where you live? No most people in Fresno have never even heard of hoop dance at least the ones I know.

Did you start it? No

Would you say that you are obsessed with or addicted to hooping? I love it!

Have you posted hooping videos? How many? No, but I have taped myself, but I'm to scared to post them maybe when I get better

Do you have friends nearby to hoop with? No, but the students I work with like to hoop with me.

Do you teach hooping? If so, how many people have you taught? I have taught my neice and a couple of students to hula hoop on her waist or how to pass it from one ahnd to another.

What kind of songs do you listen to while hooping? So far K'naan, Michael Franti, The Runawyas, Metallica, and more I just click on my itunes and let it play.

What is your favorite song right now? Anything by K'naan and Cherry Bomb by The Runaways, I also love bohemian rhapsody by Queen

Do you buy hoops or make your own? So far just buy, but next month me and my dad are going to try making them.

Have you lost weight since starting to hoop? I dunno, I try not weigh myself.

What size is your favorite hoop? So far just 40 in, but thats becuase I have only tried 40 in. in adult hoops. I have messed around with little kid dollar tree  hoops though.

Are you comfortable hooping by yourself in a public place? No not really.

How did you learn the majority of the tricks you know today? youtube and just simply messing around.

Who is your favorite hoop teacher? I like SaFire and other ones I found on youtube, i can''t remember his name, but this one guy was really good at explaining the vortex.

What advice would you give to to beginner hoopers?
 Don't be afraid to try it, it's fun. Also get use to being sore and having brusies.

 

Do you fire hoop? If not, do you want to? no and YES!

Do own an LED hoop? Where did you get it? No, but I want one some day.

How much time do you spend on

What was the first trick you learned (besides waist hooping)? The hoop waist to laso.

What is the last trick you mastered? The vortex and knee hooping

What trick so far was the hardest for you to learn? The vortex

Which one are you finding is almost impossible to get? How to get it back up from your knees.

How many hoopers would you say live in your town/city?
I think 3 including me.


Have you performed hooping in front of an audience? No except for my cats and one friend who recorded me and my husband.

Has anyone told you you were too old to be playing with a hula hoop? yes

What’s the worst injury you’ve acquired from the hoop? When I slammed myslef in the eye with it.

Have you ever hooped naked? no

Have you been to a hoop camp/retreat? Which one?
No, but I would to go to one.

Welcome Malena! I started hooping shortly after my grandmother died as well. I didn't take it up specifically for that reason, but it really helped me pull out of what was beginning to look like a very stubborn depressive state. Hooping is amazingly healing for me. I think the combination of playfulness & discovery, & the sensation of being cradled & rocked is incredibly comforting as well as just plain fun!
Thanks! yeah the rocking motion is nice. Yeah I was worried that my depression would get worse, when I hoop I feel better and more like myself. I use to do ballet and jazz along with other styles and they are very concerned with technique and competitiveness, with hoop dance it is much more playful and you can experiment a lot more. I love it! And I am very sorry about your grandma. I wish you the best!
