Hello everyone. I am in the beginning stages of becoming a part-time performer and actually make money for once. A little about me...I am 17 years old. I hoop, poi, fans, staff, levistick, eat fire, etc. My main interests are hooping and fire eating. I have used all those props on fire. I look at doing both lit and nonlit performances for my customers, including hands-on brief teachings and demonstrations. My main inspirations through these arts is tribal and circus themed.

What I need help is how to find a performer's name. No clue where to start. What are your recomendations in the beginning process of looking up and browsing names for ideas?

Keep it short, simple but unique. Avoid hoop, fairy, revolve (variations of this word), twirl, or spiral. I personal tried a couple of different names but decided to keep my normal name my performing name Martika. Martika is not a name you here very often and it means little Martha in Spanish so it's kind of unique in the fact it's a Spanish nickname. Going by a another name just doesn't fit my personality. Also keep in mind you can build a up a character(s) and have multiply performing names/personalities. I know a clown that goes by Chumzy most of the time but also goes by Low Down depending on the show setting.

*Also look at this site for already chosen names. Avoid choosing a name that's just a variation of an already chosen name out of respect for that performer.

Martika is a beautiful name. No need for a performing name with something as unique as that, love it. Unfortunetly my name is Aaron Smith, pretty basic. I did tons and tons of research last night and found a name. I was looking up moons of different planets and came across Pluto's moon Charon. And i looked up the mythoglogy behind it and it is the  name of the ferrymen of the underworld which is sometimes spelled Kharon. So I went with that spelling plus it has the -aron ending...so it relates. The history and story line is amazing and I can easily make up a theme to a performance very well. So I hope it works out...Keep your eyes on the look out for Kharon!

Well, Aaron, since you are a guy and your last name is Smith... the whitest last name out there... perhaps go for something that really strengthens who you already are.

Think names like this:

King Tut

Alexander the Great

Caesar, Brutus

Judas, Jesus

I could see you going by a name like "Maximus Flame" ... but of course you would have to credit me each time you use it! Hahaha.

Aaron!  It's good to see you're making progress with your career!  I second the sentiments above and will add this:

What are your interests outside Object Manipulation?  Do you read and have a favorite author, or love a certain band?  Look them up and see if some aspect of their work inspires a name.  You could even take some random concept you learned about in school that has always interested you and turn it into a name.  Maybe you like things having to do with outer space, or geology or something, or you love trashy mysteries or graphic novels.  Lots of people spin and burn - so focus on what makes you, well, YOU!

**Obviously, be careful of copyright laws and respectful of other peoples' intellectual property.  Don't steal a unique word or name that is someone else's creation**

So be creative and original!

I actually found a cool name. After looking up tribal names I started searching astrology and found the moons of different planents and saw Charon...one of the moons of Pluto. It had the same ending as my first name seemed pretty legit. So I looked up the greek mythology on it and found wonder information. Charon is the ferryman of the underworld who lead the dead into the underworld my boat. So he was basically the bridge between life and entering death. Very much related to certain acts like fire eating...it can be life or death sometimes. Also back in the ancient days they would place a coin in the mouth of the dead in order to pay Charon for their ride to the underworld. So the similation between the fire in my mouth and the coin in the mouth of those from the underworld seemed to mingle pretty well. I went with the alternate spelling Kharon. I hope it works out. Very interesting subject and I want to do more research. I've always loved mythology so this should stick with me. Plus, it seem unique I've never heard anyone by that name and I can get a good storyline/performance theme from it.
