I am about to make my own hoops and I went to Lowe's and purchased 1/2 inch, 125 psi tubing. Is this a good size and what will my hoop be like? heavy....light? I just want to know if this was a good choice or if I should get something different. Thanks.

I have never used 1/2 inch..... I use 3/4 inch tubing. 100 PSI is a light hoop and 160 PSI is a heavier hoop. I use both of these depending on what I am making. From what I have seen of your pics you are relatively small so this should be a good PSI for you and I don't think you will need/want 160 psi. I have a friend who is built small and when she used my hoops (160) she got bruised pretty bad on her hip bone so I started making the lighter hoops. Let me know how the 1/2 inch works out though cause I have only used 3/4 and 1 inch.
Thanks yeah I think I may go back and also buy 3/4" cause that's what I went in there for they just had it marked wrong on the shelf. So I have 3/4" connecters already. I'm still curious about the 1/2" though so I'm gonna try it.....I'll keep you updated =)
1/2 in is good for off body and twin work. You can use it for core work too, but it'll be harder. I think people usually start with heavier bigger tubing to learn moves and then work their way down to the smaller stuff if they want to go faster. It'll make the hoops light and fast.

3/4 in 100 psi or 160 is good for core work. I prefer the 100 psi, cause it's lighter but still heavy enough to give you good feedback.

Good luck ! :)
I wanted to make a set of smaller twins for poi hooping and thought the 1/2" 125 psi would work great for that. For me personally thou it is way to light. My boys are using it however and enjoying hooping, especially my 6yr old he spins two at once. My primary is a 3/4" 160 psi that ^look up^ Willow made and brought me. I think I will have to stick to the 3/4" for all my personal hoops.
Yeah I actually ended up making a mini out of the 1/2 inch stuff and it was kind of hard and rough feeling. I think I'll do what you did and make some kid hoops out of it. I went back and bought the 3/4 160 and it works much better. THanks for the input! =)
oh wow I didn't know the boys were hooping. TAKE PICTURES!!!!!
got a question about mini gages...... i have 1 inch tubing...ive torn apart a bunch of hoops and am wanting to make a set of minis out of it...anyone had 1inch tubing minis?...the psi is...100....i think id rather them be smaller in gage...but just curiouse if theyd work alright...i splugered on gaffer...and cant really afford to buy tubing. want to make twins too but again not w this gage. thank you for your info

with the other discusions here i started w a thin pipe not sure of the psi or gage yet cause i bought it 4ever ago...i think its 1/2 and a heavy psi...and love it..its going to get a make over real soon too so ill figure it out then............i dont like hooping w a 1 inch hoop now..it feels to fat....thats my opinion :)
the 1/2 inch tubing is great for minis and for off the body work, it's very nice for your hands since it's so light and easy to grab.

It is however very, very light. Difficult to learn with.

I use 1/2 100 psi, but I have also been hooping for like 4 years. As I progressed my hoops got smaller and lighter.

I bet you will find it fun, however, I do suggest starting with 3/4 100 psi or 160.
