Hi everyone!

I am an aerialist and just got a lyra for my b-day! It arrives this week. I want to tape it but I really don't know the best way. I have heard that Gaffers tape works best? If anyone knows where to get Gaffers tape or a good taping technique please let me know!

Thanks!

I would not use gaffers tape i think it would gum up with use.

We usually use trapeze tape which is kind of like the strapping tape you might use on a sprained ankle but black, you can buy it from most on line circus shops.

When you tape the side parts that you would hold when you are sitting in the hoop make sure you start from the top and go down, this helps the tape last longer as your hands won't pull on the edges when you hang of it.

You can also use them untaped. i do, it just takes a little bit of getting use to and some rosin but the hoop looks great.

Thanks so much! There is a circus arts place near me so I will look into purchasing some trapeze tape:)  I have one more question though, if i were to tape it, should I wrap it with pre-wrap before I tape with trapeze tape?

Thank you!

Nah i don't think you'll need to, we don't the trapeze tape comes off easy enough when you come to replace it. If you think you would like it a tiny bit softer you can ad two or three layers of tape. There is a good guide here on adding layers of tape (section 5.1)

Hey, i don't have any answers for your questions but I was hoping you could tell me what a lyra is ?

I sure can! A lyra is a peice of aerial circus equipment, it is also called an aerial hoop or cerceau. It's like a hula hoop that has a rope rigged to the top and hangs fom the ceiling. There are some great lyra videos on you tube if you want to check it out!
