What diameter/size should I buy?
Since you'll be using your fire hoop long-term and they aren't easy to quickly replace it is often recommended that you buy a size that is smaller than your regular practice hoop. This will of course make the hoop harder to work with at first and you'll have to practice with it a bit more to feel comfortable but this will prevent you from purchasing a hoop and then 6 months later feeling like your fire hoop is HUGE and bulky if you've downsized since purchasing. As well the added size of the hoop due to the spokes will be less noticeable if the base of the hoop is smaller than you're used to. Keep in mind you can also buy a larger size now then next year gift or sell that hoop to a friend and purchase a newer, smaller hoop for yourself!
Why are flexible spokes important?
If you are vertical hooping and accidently hit the ground if the spoke is not flexible it is likely to break off or damage the hoop on impact. As well flexible spokes can be bend over and taped to reduce the hoop size for travel.
Why does the length of the spoke matter?
The longer your spoke is the more likely you will be to hit the ground. Spokes can add anywhere from 10-20 extra inches to the diameter of your hoop and this change in size will effect the moves you can do. You'll have to vertical chest hoop at a shallow angle so you don't hit the ground or if the hoop is too big you won't be able to hand hoop horizontally in front of you without hitting your knees. Longer spokes will keep the flam further from your body which may make you feel more comfortable. With shorter spokes you will want to keep the hoop moving and be aware of your grip so the flame doesn't get to hot for comfort.
How many spokes should a fire hoop have?
This is your personal preference. Standard is 5 or 6. Keep in mind that the more spokes on your hoop the less surface area you'll have to hold onto which will make off body moves and breaks more difficult.
More spokes means there will be more fire right?
This is not necessarily the case. Spokes can also have different amounts of kevlar in them which will change how big your flames are. You may prefer lots of spokes with small flames each or a few spokes with big flames.
How much Kelvar should my spokes have?
The more kevlar on your spokes the bigger and longer your flames will last. Some companies offer different sizes or length of kevlar. Choose your wick size based on your experience and comfort level with fire hooping.
What kind of weight should a fire hoop be?
If you are used to a heavy hoop a heavy fire hoop may be your preference. Heavier hoops can leave bruising and sometimes leave a hooper feeling like the hoop is overpowering them. Lighter hoops can take some time to get used to but will allow you to move fast, transition quickly and toss the hoop comfortably.
How do I make my own fire hoop?
I made my first fire hoop and continue to make my hoops to this day. It can be a time consuming and tedious process and you will have to pre-order kevlar and kevlar thread before you can begin. Check out the photo below to generate ideas about building your own fire hoop.
