I have an LED mood hoop that I've had for quite some time and the grip tape is completely ripped off now. I know that some people have sanded the inside of their hoops for grip instead of using the tape. I don't really know how well I would be able to tape my own hoop and sanding it just seems so much easier/cheaper than tape.
Any suggestions or preferences?

I used to always have grip tape on my hoops and works well, however it does come off over time. I started sanding my hoops. My Fire hoop is sanded just on the inside. I prefer it better that way. Even if you hoop in the rain, no tape will be coming off from the water... and will still provide the grip that you need. Also for LED hoops, all the lights are visible, and looks prettier showing off it's full pattern. That's just my 2 cents on this.

I like a strip of gaffer on the inside of my LED hoop. I cut it in to strips and leave gaps. I like how they catch. I do prefer my polypros with no tape though. I find with the extra weight of the LED, I need a bit more grip. I think that everyone will have a different personal preference.
Permalink Reply by Taylien on August 20, 2012 at 11:05am I prefer grip, I use a small strip on the inside of my hoops. I rarely have to change it. The main reason I don't like sanding is because if I take my hoop outside to a festival, dirt gets stuck in the sanded-down part and it's really really difficult to clean. I much prefer using grip tape where I can just rip it off and put a new strip on.

You can get transparent first aid tape at the drug store. It has little tiny holes in it that make for AMAZING grip. My favourite brand is the Nexcare Flex Tape or something like that. Just wrap a spiral of that ($3-4) around your hoop, and no one will ever see the tape, and you'll have the grippiest hoop.

Permalink Reply by Japaneses Hornet on August 20, 2012 at 3:42pm I have a sanded LED hoop that I added grip tape to because I needed more grip, so it really is a personal preference. It gripped just fine without the tape but I like the gaffers tape.
Permalink Reply by Mina Bear on August 21, 2012 at 8:26am I like sanding better, it doesnt hide ANY light what so ever obviously since no tape will be blocking, it works great for grip, and tape gets all sticky and gross after a while. Sanding is how all of my led hoops are, and even some untaped practice day hoops
